Classic Boats Reference Material

I am looking for some good reference material (pictures etc.) for classic boats. I want my barrel back to be a somewhat accurate representation of the original Chris Craft boat. I found a book called "The Real Runabouts" Volume 1 at classicboatsconnection.com. Before I order it thought I would check...

Re: Windscreen for Classic Boats

Can you get the dimensions of the screens? If the builder purchased three screens, I'm thinking that they are quite narrow.

Thanks,

epoxy types compatibility

New to using epoxy. Have been using poxy-grip with great success, but it has a slow cure. Any problems in using 5min epoxy when I need to use a shim on a part that is later glued up with poxy-grip?

Thanks,

Cutting notches for keel on barrel back

The keel on my boat is made up of two pieces laminated to a combined thickness of 1 1/2 inches. It looks like the first layer fits in a notch that is 3/4 inch deep and the second layer is glued to that and later faired down. Do I cut the notches 3/4 deep? and what about the transom? seems like both ...

Placement of exhaust ports on barrelback

In pictures that I have seen, it looks like exhaust ports are centered on the waterline. Half of the opening above and the other half below. Is that correct? I want to know so that my transom is clear when I install the ports. Think I will put in backing for the ports also. How far in are the ports ...

classic steering wheel for barrelback

What are you guys using for a steering wheel for your classic boats? And where are you getting them? Found some at a place called qualityrestorations.com they had banjo style wheels (accurate for the barrelback) but they are $1500. Too much for a steering wheel! Just looking for something close that...

Re: Size of exhaust port for barrelback 19'

Done some research. Local boat guy says adapters can be a problem, and that I should go with a port that is 4" to match the 4" port on the engine. Anybody know anything about "Buck Algonquin" exhaust ports? Looks like the flange is angled which might match the curved transom on the barrelback so it ...

Re: barrel back 19 transom

Now it makes sense! Thanks guys, One last question. Should I leave everything oversize for now and do the angle thing when I get to the planking part of the build?

barrel back 19 transom

Getting ready to cut and assemble the transom. I'm confused by looking at the plans. They say to cut the frame overside and taper at 12 degrees. See if i'm right in my assumption. The dimension on the full size plan pattern is the dimension on the top (forward) of the 3/4 plywood. So the 12 degree c...

Size of exhaust port for barrelback 19'

Getting ready to build the transom for my barrelback. Planning ahead for placement of the exhaust ports. Glen L offers two what they call classic cone exhaust ports in either 3 1/2 or 2 3/8 od ports. I am planning to install a 4.3 mercruiser v6 and using two exhaust ports. What size would you guys g...

Barrelback - build as 19' or 20' ??

Wondering about the advantages or disadvantages of streching the 19' barrelback to 20'. I'm planning on putting a 4.3 mercruser v6 in the boat so the 4.3 should fit. Right? Would motor installation be easier in the 20' version? Is it easier to install the battens etc? I'm fininishing up my frames so...
