Barrelback - build as 19' or 20' ??

Wondering about the advantages or disadvantages of streching the 19' barrelback to 20'. I'm planning on putting a 4.3 mercruser v6 in the boat so the 4.3 should fit. Right? Would motor installation be easier in the 20' version? Is it easier to install the battens etc? I'm fininishing up my frames so...

Re: Making wood patterns to cut out parts?

I use patterns all the time when building furniture. What I do is make a pattern using 1/2 mdf. I trace the paper plan onto the mdf. The mdf is then cut on the band saw and then smoothed out with sand paper. ( it shapes easily ). I keep checking by final shaping to the paper plan until I get a perfe...

motor stringers for the barrel back

I'm building my boat out of 4/4 mahogany. I want to laminate my motor stringers out of the mahogany. Two pieces will come out to a thickness of 1 5/8 inches. Is that thick enough? If not, I would rather go to a triple lamination than add plywood to one side. If I need to go thicker what is the prefe...

Re: what length raptor fastener for plywood hull and siding

Thanks John,

I was thinking about using the raptor brad nails, but since they don't go down to 1/4" I guess I'll have to go with staples. Maybe even both brads and staples. Make any sense to you?

what length raptor fastener for plywood hull and siding

Thinking about using raptor fasteners for the 1/8 plywood strips for the hull and sides. What length? 7/16"?

Thanks,

plywood for hull and sides

Planning ahead on the build of my barrelback. I'm working on the frames now. My plans call for 1/8" plywood strips for the hull laminations. My the thinnest marine plywood my hardwood supplier is 4mm which is slightly over 1/8". Will I be ok with that?

Thanks,

Re: Windshield for Barrel Back

Thanks everyone! Did you get a glass shop to cut the glass for the frames? Or was that ordered also?

Windshield for Barrel Back

I'm getting ready to start my Barrel Back project. I like to plan way ahead. What are you guys doing about a windshield on a classic boat? I can't seem to find anything on the internet. Would like it to be as close as a replica of the real thing.

Re: Epoxy glue for frames & screw size

Thanks!

I went ahead and ordered glue and fasteners from glen l. Local vendors have to order bronze screws and the marine shops are not that familar with epoxy glue. Looks like glen l is a better deal anyway.

Epoxy glue for frames & screw size

I want to get started on my barrel back frames this weekend. Don't want to order the kit from Glen L at this time. Any recommendations for a good epoxy glue that I can pickup locally? Also I want to pickup some bronze screws to attach the gussets (1/2) to the 3/4 mahogany frames. 1 inch #8 screws so...

building frames for the barrel back

I'm a pretty good woodworker when making fine furniture. But this boat building is new to me so i'm gonna ask some pretty simple and what might seem to be silly questions before I get started. Got my plans today, and am ready to get some hardwood and start. How precise do the frames need to be? I am...

Re: California emission rules for home built boats.

I did some additional research with the Vessel Unit of DMV in Sacramento. They advised me that the emmission section does not apply once the code "SPCN" (self constructed) is entered in the section that calls for the Builder (make) of the boat. Hope this helps anyone else.

California emission rules for home built boats.

Thinking about building a Barrel Back. Called a marine supply today to get pricing on a mercruser 5.7 and 4.3. The partsman told me that the newer motors are required to have catalytic converters. Rebuilds do not. My fear is that I put a non compliant motor in my boat and then can't get it registere...
