Re: Ski King Keel/Stringer orientation

...The keel between the frames "O" through "3" should be a straight line but is not a level line. Thanks for the comments Roberta. I understand the keel being at an angle. The issue I see is, while the plans say the keel should be a straight line between 0 and 3, the dimensions show it isn't. You c...

Ski King Keel/Stringer orientation

I'm looking at how the Ski King goes together and trying to figure out/mock up the components to locate the engine, and I've found something that confuses me... In the attached picture, the top part is the layout of the frames on the stringers. The note indicates that the keel is a straight line fro...

Re: Ski King with Buick 215 power

Craig, I believe you will be pleased with the 215 for power in your Ski King. The power to weight ratio really can't be beat! Plus it will have a true V-8 sound. <snip> I hope I have been helpful in your planning stage. Jon Thanks Jon, all of the comments help. I'm probably beating this to death bu...

Re: Ski King with Buick 215 power

I took another one of Paul's spreadsheets and expanded on it for my own use. http://www.chelseacoachworks.com/pages/show_frame.php?menu=../boats/boat_bar.html&content=http%3A//www.chelseacoachworks.com/boats/pages/articles.html I put in my own formulas so I'd understand it better and this is what I ...

Re: Ski King with Buick 215 power

Thanks Paul, Very helpful info, as always! My main concern there was if the 6.75" strut would work and it sounds like it will. I also spent some time downstairs measuring the 215 and hanging it at 16 degrees to get a feel for what sort of flange height I'll be able to use. With those two numbers I c...

Ski King with Buick 215 power

Rather than continuing to derail Lil Jon's thread on manifolds for the 215, I thought I'd start a new thread where I can ask questions/do a reality check on what I'm thinking for my project plans. Some background info: I'm new to this boat stuff, I've been around boats but haven't built or even owne...

Re: Buick/Rover 215 aluminum v-8 exhaust manifolds

Craig, I had room in my 12' Tiny Might to install the Buick with bellhousing and Velvet drive 71-C in the standard fashion of flywheel rear. If I can do that I don't see why you would not have plenty of room in your ski king? Remember, the Buick is shorter than the 283 and has a shallower oil pan, ...

Re: Buick/Rover 215 aluminum v-8 exhaust manifolds

Graig, What are the advantages of that set-up? Just curious, trying to fit all pieces together here too  Thanks, Joris Because the engine is mounted at an angle, if you put the flywheel end forward you can mount the engine lower in the boat. Assuming you don't change the shaft angle, mounting...

Re: Buick/Rover 215 aluminum v-8 exhaust manifolds

Craig, When you say flywheel forward, are you running this in a V-drive configuration or are you connecting the prop shaft to the snout of the crank? The desire would be to run it with a damper plate mounted on the snout of the crank. A marine transmission (71c or whatever) would then couple with t...

Re: Buick/Rover 215 aluminum v-8 exhaust manifolds

I knew it was still on the stringers. I just hope I can get it loaded tomorrow. I'm taking along an engine hoist and tools... the hope is I can lift it and back a trailer under it. A follow up and then I'll stop highjacking this thread. It was a long day, but I was able to pick up the engine last S...

Re: Buick/Rover 215 aluminum v-8 exhaust manifolds

Craig, I saw the engine your talking about on ebay. I contacted the seller and had him send more photo's. The engine is still attached to the boat stringers and transom! He chainsawed the boat up and left he engine attached to the transom, and it has a stern drive attached also! Stern drive? Dang, ...

Re: Buick/Rover 215 aluminum v-8 exhaust manifolds

Thanks for the info, Jon. My needs may have changed though. I stumbled onto a Buick engine that was described incorrectly as a 215 Nailhead. Looking into it further the description didn't list much, but under condition it was mentioned it had been taken out of a boat. I put in what I thought was a l...

Re: forms

Plans for which boat? On the ski king plans for example there is a measurement to the bottom of the notches in the stringers for the frames... but your plans may not even use motor stringers so it's hard to say exactly what you you need. If you give some more detail, someone who's already built the ...

Re: Stretching the Ski King

It's going to be a few months until I can invest any real money into this so in the meantime I'm looking at the plans, drawing out the frames, and playing around with spreadsheets to figure things out. At this point my plan is to stretch each frame up to 4a by 10%. I'm wondering about a curved tran...
