Re: Outside build

Go for it! And I'll second Graham's comment on walking back and forth from the workshop to the building area. It was about 40 feet for me and took time away from the build, not to mention a well worn path through the grass. Make sure you post lots of progress updates and maybe it will remind me of o...

Re: Outside build

I'm building a Flat's Flyer almost completely outside. I did make the frames, stem, knee, and breasthook inside then set up my building frame outside. Make sure you encapsulate your frames completely. Don't worry about the surfaces that will be epoxied to another member later, most likely you'll fai...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Kelly - No need for an outside power outlet, I wouldn't dare let Bev sleep outside in a tent, I'd let you two sleep inside the shop

Re: Utility build

Some Japanese woodworkers believe that only God can make something perfect. Therefore, if they build something that turns out perfect, they intentionally put a dent in the wood, make a scratch somewhere, etc., just so that it's not perfect. As a woodworker, I've never made anything perfect and remin...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

I can't wait to get started on the topsides, and yes, my mind is racing. Fortunately for me, but unfortunately for my build, I received a promotion and will need to relocate to the Florida panhandle. Puts the build on hold until after the move. The good thing though is the LOML doesn't want the gara...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Was at a neighbors last night for a party and he asked me how the build was going. Told him I was as far along as I could go until I got some folks together to flip her. He's a fireman and had about 10 of his buddies show up for the party. Next thing I knew, we were flipping her! We were all kinda f...

Thanks BIll. After all the work put into it, I guess it's becoming my baby now and don't want to see her get hurt.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

This weekend is for building the cradle for after the flip, but as I noodlate on how this is going to happen, I got to thinking (I know, that's a bad thing). There will come a point during the flip that the boat will be on its side while people move around to "catch" it as it is rolled. Is...

Re: Meeting USCG Requirements

Great information Jack. And I can attest to the FWC stops on St Johns. In one summer I got visited 3 times, and the third time I was given a safety check sticker, not sure about the voluntary part, and as a former LE officer I always welcome a visit from someone wanting to make sure I'm safe. After ...

Re: Frearson vs. Square Drive Poll

I have not used square drive SB screws, only the frearson SB while building the Flats Flyer. I have used the square drive screws (stainless) and liked how they drive better. I stripped a lot of frearson screws while driving into pine/fir, but I never stripped a square drive, even in red oak. I would...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

At least the sanding of the primer/paint seems to go much quicker and easier. Hang in there yourself Carl, we'll both be moving to the fun stuff soon. I can say that the bottom is done! WOO WHOO I want to let the paint harden a couple of three weeks before the flip. Gives me time to build a cradle u...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Thanks Kelly.

Going to look at removing a paint run this weekend and may need to put on another coat of paint. We'll see how it goes. I want to let the paint cure for at least 2 weeks before flipping to make sure it's hard. Probably looking at a flip in mid-May.
