Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Well I started my build of the FF this weekend and made what I think is good progress. Completed the transom knee, breasthook and stem, now to start the frames. Wife works this weekend so I should get plenty of time at least one day's work on it. Plans and patterns are excellent and so easy to follo...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Thanks for the tip Kelly, I didn't know West Marine sold the silicone bronze nails/fasteners. I was planning on buying the epoxy from them as they have a store close to my office over in Melbourne. Figure by purchasing locally, if I need something on short notice I had a source. How's the build goin...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Thanks for the info Kelly. After I posted my question concerning the chine and planking, I got to the fairing chapter in the Boatbuilding in Plywood book and it said exactly what you said. Ordered fastners from Glen-L last Friday and still waiting for a confirmation email that they were shipped. I s...

Hopefully the fasteners come in but regardless, I'll be making frames and kindling this weekend. As you're well ahead of me, I'll be following your build clo...

Re: Can't find 1/4" plywood

I know it's still a bit of a drive, but Dixie Ply and 84 Lumber in Orlando both have marine ply. You might check an 84 Lumber in your area or Tampa.

Re: Flying Saucer question

I just recieved the plans for the Florida Flats and saw the same thing. But reading on, the instructions indicate that the gap is to avoid any unsightly curves in the plywood decking that could be caused by a frame that hasn't been faired well.

New Victim of the Boat Building Bug - Orlando

Hey all, just joined the forum after ordering a set of plans for the Flats Flyer. I'm not entirely new to boat building as I built a Mr. John back in the early 80's. Moved to central Florida and couldn't resist building a boat any longer. I do own a Hurricane 188 deck boat but it doesn't take me eve...
