Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Kelly, I found a discrepancy in the plans and wanted to see what you did on your build. According to the plans, sheet 4 of 4 calls out the chine as 3/4" x 2" but the bill of materials call out 3/4" x 1 3/4". I'm getting ready to cut the notches in the frames when I noticed this. ...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Still looking great Kelly. I like the way your platform looks, I can't wait to get as far as you have. I've been making much use out of my bottom bearing bits to clean up the gussets. I haven't tried fitting them up, but how did your frames 5&6 fit up with your stem? As the stem is beveled on bo...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Had an extra day off this weekend and was able to complete all the frames. Breasthook, knee, and stem completed as well, so the only thing left is the transom. Hopefully I'll complete it this weekend and then off to the building frame.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Looking forward to more pics. I'm always watching to see what you post for your build and keeping all your experiences in mind as I progress. Hoping to get all the frames finished this weekend and maybe the transom. Then it's the building form!

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

It's looking great Kelly.

I plan on using the same type of hatch lids as you are. I think they look very clean and will get me finished sooner.

Have you thought about floatation foam locations yet?

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Well in case you missed me  , I've been doing some work on the frames but life has really gotten in the way. We had a major scare with my wife's health, but after consultation with surgeons and breast biopsies (sp?) we had great news that it was just a benign mass and only need to monitor i...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Looking good so far. Wish I could get back into the "garage-mahol" to do some more work on my build but life gets in the way at the most inopportune times.

Re: A Texan Tubby Tug Build

You might try the big boxes for PVC sheet stock. It's typically used as trim for exterior work and can be glued using regular PVC glue. It machines like wood and comes in white, with and without texture.

Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Well I started my build of the FF this weekend and made what I think is good progress. Completed the transom knee, breasthook and stem, now to start the frames. Wife works this weekend so I should get plenty of time at least one day's work on it. Plans and patterns are excellent and so easy to follo...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Thanks for the tip Kelly, I didn't know West Marine sold the silicone bronze nails/fasteners. I was planning on buying the epoxy from them as they have a store close to my office over in Melbourne. Figure by purchasing locally, if I need something on short notice I had a source. How's the build goin...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Thanks for the info Kelly. After I posted my question concerning the chine and planking, I got to the fairing chapter in the Boatbuilding in Plywood book and it said exactly what you said. Ordered fastners from Glen-L last Friday and still waiting for a confirmation email that they were shipped. I s...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Great looking build so far SpecialK. I just received my copy of the plans for a Flats Flyer last month and have fasteners and lumber on order. Hopefully the fasteners come in but regardless, I'll be making frames and kindling this weekend. As you're well ahead of me, I'll be following your build clo...
