Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Transom installed with the cross brace and keel laid and bottom battens in place. Next will be the chine/shear install after I pick up the lumber. Nice thing about building my own boat is no financing and I don't need to spend the money until I need to. Holding off the final attachment up front unti...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Thanks for the input Bill, I think I'm going for it when the time comes.

Layed the first layer of the keel today, should have the final layer on the frames tomorrow. Will need to install using screws from the inside, which means they'll all be put in overhead. Oh how I hate overhead work :x :x

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

I say go with the green stripe. I am so jealous of your progress and hope to see it when you bring it down to Florida.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Kelly, Have you thought about or considered a live well? I'm going to look into it once I do the flip and get a better idea of how much room I have after I make space for batteries, fuel tank, life jackets, etc., etc... I'm thinking about installing a piece of ply under the side deck area and using ...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

You need to add some shark teeth to the bow to scare away the sharks. But then again, it might scare away all the fish.... It looks menacing.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

I'm getting ready to pick up plywood for the bottom and side skins and I'm considering using 1/2" thick for the rear skin and two 1/4" thick sheets for the stem area where the curve's are. Has anyone done this and what pitfalls should I be watching for? The instructions call out for all 1/...

Re: Mr John

This was the first boat I ever built, back in the early 80's. I don't know how many blisters I got driving in all the screws by hand! Was a fun little boat, but my brother talked me out of fiberglassing it so it leaked everywhere the first time out. Was fun building though and enjoyed the boat.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Looking forward to more pictures Kelly.

I'm going to be in Augusta at the end of the month. If you're off work, perhaps I could come by and see the build progress. Either way, I might just need to drag my deck boat over when you come down in September.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Well it's been a while but I've been busy with spring time in Florida and the Shriners. Also have a new work schedule that allows me to take every other Friday off, and I took advantage of it this weekend. Thought I'd be further along than I was but having fun none the less. Was able to put up the b...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Kelly, Knowing what you're all dealing with up north, I hate to say this. But the build has been slowed down to allow some time to do a little fishing and boating. Was 80 degrees this past weekend and just couldn't pass up the chance. Been hitting the perch in Lake Monroe and hanging out at a couple...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Looking great Kelly. I was wondering how to attach some of the deck battens when I get to that point and see you used pocket screws, would have never thought of that and I have a Kreg jig that will make it sooo much easier when I get there. Question though, it looks like your float material has plug...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Finished the transom tonight. Next is cutting notches in the frames for the chine log and shear, then on to the building frame.

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Kelly, I found a discrepancy in the plans and wanted to see what you did on your build. According to the plans, sheet 4 of 4 calls out the chine as 3/4" x 2" but the bill of materials call out 3/4" x 1 3/4". I'm getting ready to cut the notches in the frames when I noticed this. ...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in S.C.

Still looking great Kelly. I like the way your platform looks, I can't wait to get as far as you have. I've been making much use out of my bottom bearing bits to clean up the gussets. I haven't tried fitting them up, but how did your frames 5&6 fit up with your stem? As the stem is beveled on bo...

Re: Flats Flyer Build in Orlando

Had an extra day off this weekend and was able to complete all the frames. Breasthook, knee, and stem completed as well, so the only thing left is the transom. Hopefully I'll complete it this weekend and then off to the building frame.
