Re: Catalina 22 repairs
As promised, here are photos of my repairs and upgrades (so far). First up, the mast. Because I got impatient and tried to raise the mast in my yard without checking the owner's manual, without mechanical leverage and without consulting You Tube, I ended up damaging the step end where the pin goes t...

Re: Catalina 22 repairs
Thanks for your responses DrBryan and Billy. Good idea on the 2-part varnish, but I'm trying to save money on this repair. The cheapest 2-part marine varnish I saw online in a quick search is over 80 bucks a quart. So I think I'll use the varnish I have on hand and if peeling or bubbling become an i...

Catalina 22 repairs
I'm making some upgrades and repairs to my Catalina 22. Right now I'm replacing the companionway framing and crib boards, which are the original teak, 42 years old and in bad shape. Teak is very expensive and to buy the ready-made ones from Catalina Direct are about $600.00. So I'm making them mysel...

Re: caravan fridge on a boat
I recommend getting something like an Engel and enough solar panels and batteries to support it instead. Aside from the leveling issue, since the RV units run on propane, you'd have the potential for a quite literally explosive situation on your hands. Propane is heavier than air so there's no where...

Re: What? Hagerty doesn't insure plywood boats?
I built the Skipjack myself from plans. I even gave the agent a link to my build thread so they could verify the $9000.00+ cost of materials.

Re: What? Hagerty doesn't insure plywood boats?
Strange.
I have all my other insurance with State Farm, but my agent there couldn't get me a policy for my brand new Stevenson Skipjack, made of plywood. But I WAS able to get a policy with Hagerty. This was in 2015 thru 2017. Go figure.

Re: 16' Ski Boat Restoration
Milhouse, I overcame the orange peel problem this way: Lightly RO sand off most of the orange peel, taking care not to expose the primer. Mix a solution of half thinner and half paint. Spray several thin coats with HVLP sprayer about 15 to 30 minutes apart (enough time for the thinner to evaporate o...

Re: Amigo Outboard
I can't speak from personal experience except for the 2 HP outboard I used on my Glen-L 21 CB (max 3kt, disp. about 1400 lb), but James Baldwin of Atomvoyages.com used a 3.5 hp outboard for a while on his Pearson Triton 28. He found it to be adequate in calm weather and seas. In brisker conditions h...

Re: Glen-L 17 overnighter sloop build
Milhouse, I used something called "surfacing veil" on the plywood that was to be varnished. This is a 3-oz. fiberglass cloth similar to 6-oz. cloth, but thin and delicate with an extremely fine weave. Think silk. After a couple coats of epoxy and four coats of varnish it's completely invisible in ev...

Here's what unstained Okoume plywood looks like after applying Sytem Three S-1 penetrating epoxy, 3 oz. "surfacing veil" fiberglass cloth wetted with System Three Silvertip epoxy plus one more coat, and 6 coats of Pettit Captain's Spar Varnish. https://i.imgur.com/JhDdM40.jpg https://i.imgur.com/YVw...

Re: New Builder from Seattle, Wa
Hi Jon and welcome. That's a nice looking design you're planning. Have you considered the similar Glen-L Barrelback? (Well, similar-looking above the waterline anyway.) I live in Kirkland and built a Stevenson Designs Super Skipjack. Didn't like how it sailed so I'm making some modifications. Phase ...

A Different Minuet from the UK
Found this on YouTube. I'd love to get my hands on one of these, but I can't find the builder or any for sale. They may no longer be in business plus the logistics of shipping one from the UK may be prohibitive anyway. I wonder if there is a design or plans one could build from? https://www.youtube....

Re: New Tuffy build in Bremerton, Wa
For my Skipjack I purchased most of the wood from Midway Plywood in Mukilteo WA. They have Okoume and Meranti marine plywood, plus all sorts of board stock suitable for boatbuilding, including teak, sapele mahogany, white oak and many other species. In particular they often have nice long and clear ...
