Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We left the Paducah city docks early on October 1st with 8 other looper boats heading off the Ohio River and up the Tennessee River to the Kentucky Dam lock. This route is generally not used by looper boats because of long delays at the lock as this is the primary route for all the tows but we had n...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

On the trailer, I am at 11'9". The tallest part is my TV antenna so if that was not there, I would be about 6" less. On the water with the VHF antenna down, I'm at 8'10". I don't want to portage around any areas as that would not technically be completing the loop but I have that option in my back p...

Re: Marine survey for boat insurance

When you are talking to insurance agents/insurance companies, don't use the word homebuilt instead use the word custom built. Your best bet will be what ever company you insure your home and cars with. I had no trouble insuring my True Grit design without a survey. The underwriter with the insurance...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Right now the looper boats are kinda bunched up because everyone had to get through the Illinois River locks before they closed for 2+ weeks. We were one of the last boats to go through those locks before they closed. They will reopen the first week of October and there are several boats waiting in ...

We stop for lunch at Kirchhoff's Bakery and deli, a local eatery that has been located in Paducah since 1873. On the way back to the boat we grab at picture of a steam engine along the waterfront.

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We also visited the River Discovery Center museum in downtown Paducah. There were several models of river boats along with a tow boat driving simulator at the museum. I did good but Noreen would not try it. One river boat model caught my eye. IMG_5665.JPG Our next stop was the National Quilt museum....

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Monday morning, we our off the boat for a tour of downtown Paducah having not been on shore for four days. The admiral takes a break as the temps are in the low 90's. IMG_5652.JPG Downtown Paducah has shops and galleries in located in old buildings that have been restored. IMG_5653.JPG There is a 11...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We reach the Ohio River before noon and start upstream on the Ohio to Paducah. Our speed drops from 14-15 mph on the Mississippi to less than 8 mph on the Ohio River. The Ohio water is a blue green color whereas the Mississippi was chocolate brown. After going through the Olmsted lock on the Ohio Ri...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We left Evansville Illinois on Sept. 26th and headed back to the Mississippi River and headed downstream. The further South we went on the Mississippi River, the stronger the current become. We were moving along at 15 mph at times when we normally would be going 8 mph at 2500 rpm. When we met tows g...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

I will get around the big bend of Florida by doing it in segments. The ICW (protected waters) ends a few miles East of Apalachicola at Carrabella Florida. At Carrabella, most boats on the Great Loop do an overnight passage across the Gulf to Tarpon Springs where the ICW starts again. This is because...

We are anchored for the next couple of days by Cape Girardeau, Mo. on a side canal of the Mississippi. Our next stop will be Paducah, Ky.

Bill: Yes we will be coming down the Tenn-Tom waterway.
Kens: We would love to meet up with you when we get to your area. Lets keep in touch.

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We continued past St. Louis and on down the Mississippi to the Kaskaskia River where we turned up the Kaskaskia and went upstream about 10 miles to Evansville, Illinois and docked at a free dock at a bar/grill. This location is not far from where Ray and Vickie Macke live so they came down and we we...

Just after the Illinois River and Mississippi River meet the scenery changes to high bluffs along the Mississippi IMG_5625.JPG Also North of St Louis, the Missouri River empties in to the Mississippi River. Near this area, a statue of Our Lady of the Rivers overlooks the river. This shrine was erect...

Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Well, we are finally off on the trip of our lifetime and the major reason I spent four years of my life building this boat. The Great Loop is a water route that basically circles the Eastern half of the United Stated. A quick internet search can give you lots of details on the route so I won't repea...
