Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

There were huge piles of logs at the loading dock ready to be ground up into chips. I didn't realize that Northern Mississippi and Alabama had so many pine trees. IMG_5761.JPG IMG_5762.JPG We traveled for several days with a 31' Ranger Tug. Back at Aqua Harbor marina, near the junction of the Tennes...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

It was quite the experience going through the huge Wilson lock. IMG_5750.JPG After going back downstream on the Tennessee River for a day, we make a left turn and start down the Tenn-Tom waterway that will take us to Mobile and the Gulf of Mexico. The Tenn-Tom starts out going up Yellow creek but th...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We stayed a week at Joe Wheeler marina attending the Great Loop rendezvous. We meet lots of great people there and learned about what was ahead of us on traveling on South and up the East coast next Spring. There were about 50 boat there that people were in progress on the Great Loop. Later in the a...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Some more pictures going through Wilson Lock on the way to Joe Wheeler lodge and marina. IMG_5710.JPG In Wilson lock and locks on the Tenn-Tom waterway, there are several floating bollards that are recessed into the lock walls that boats tie to when locking through. When I built the True Grit, I loc...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

The cell phone coverage has been very slow or unavailable everyplace we have stopped since the last post. The marina wifi have even been worse. We spent 6 days at Joe Wheeler State Park Marina while attending the Great Loop Fall Rendezvous. The seminars were very helpful in planning for future stops...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Yes, we are at the top of the Tenn-Tom, but we are going to go on up the Tennessee River to Joe Wheeler state Park Marina for a gathering of Great Loop boats next week. There will be seminars on what to see and expect in Florida, the Bahamas, and going up the ICW on the East coast. The seminars will...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

The civil war town of Johnsonville was along the Tennessee River where union steamboats would unload supplies that were then transferred to the railroad going to Nashville and points South. IMG_5699.JPG Continuing on South, we stop at Clifton, TN and then pass through Pickwick lock. With heavy rain ...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

After we got through Kentucky dam lock, we went through the canal over to Barkley Lake and the Cumberland River and headed upstream to Kuttawa marina where we met Ray Macke with his "True Grit" boat. Ray and Vickie would then cruise with us for a day where we ended up at Paris Landing State Park mar...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We left the Paducah city docks early on October 1st with 8 other looper boats heading off the Ohio River and up the Tennessee River to the Kentucky Dam lock. This route is generally not used by looper boats because of long delays at the lock as this is the primary route for all the tows but we had n...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

On the trailer, I am at 11'9". The tallest part is my TV antenna so if that was not there, I would be about 6" less. On the water with the VHF antenna down, I'm at 8'10". I don't want to portage around any areas as that would not technically be completing the loop but I have that option in my back p...

Re: Marine survey for boat insurance

When you are talking to insurance agents/insurance companies, don't use the word homebuilt instead use the word custom built. Your best bet will be what ever company you insure your home and cars with. I had no trouble insuring my True Grit design without a survey. The underwriter with the insurance...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Right now the looper boats are kinda bunched up because everyone had to get through the Illinois River locks before they closed for 2+ weeks. We were one of the last boats to go through those locks before they closed. They will reopen the first week of October and there are several boats waiting in ...

We stop for lunch at Kirchhoff's Bakery and deli, a local eatery that has been located in Paducah since 1873. On the way back to the boat we grab at picture of a steam engine along the waterfront.
