Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We left Ft Myers and headed to Naples where we docked at the city marina for two nights. IMG_20200126_160806.jpg The town of Naples is very nice but expensive. We walked to the city pier that was about 6 blocks from the marina. The side walk in the residential area going to the pier was lined with f...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We are currently in Marathon, which is down in the Florida Keys. We arrived here on Thursday Jan. 30th after a rough ride across Florida Bay. The boat handles the rough water fine with the auto-pilot doing the steering but we get tired after hours of bouncing around. Before we left Ft Myers, we took...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

Everybody young and old were having fun on the train ride. Noreen even agreed to go for a ride with me on the train. IMG_20200120_154029.jpg There was also an old steam engine on display in the park. This engine was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1905 and was used at various locations on the A...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We had a burger at the concession stand that overlooked one of the lakes in the park where we were warned not to feed the alligators. IMG_20200120_142656.jpg Having finished our burgers, we started walking one of the paths along the water, where our first wild alligator was spotted sunning on a log....

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We are still docked at the same marina in Ft. Myers but we will be leaving the first part of next week for Marathon. The last couple of days have been real cold here by Florida standards with lows in the upper 30's. It was funny the warnings on the news to watch out for iguanas falling from trees. W...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

The Estero River ran along the North side of the park. This river went out to the Gulf and was used by the community for bringing supplies in and shipping good out. Today the river is a scenic canoe voyage. IMG_20200109_123547.jpg There were trails in the park that followed the river with signs warn...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

There was a woodworking shop at the settlement with many old tools. If I had to use them to build my boat, I think it would have taken considerable longer and probably minus a few fingers also. IMG_5948.JPG IMG_20200109_120352.jpg Walking around the grounds, we stumbled upon a gopher tortoise. IMG_5...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

On the final day that Ray was in Ft Myers, we drove South to Koreshan State Park on the Estero River. This park was the site of a utopian community of 200 people that relocated from Chicago to Florida in 1894. IMG_5960.JPG There were several old buildings used by the community that were open for vie...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

The Edison home was larger than the Ford home and Edison spent alot more time each year than Ford in Ft Myers. IMG_5932.JPG We walked around the grounds of the homes where we discovered odd roots on a tree. IMG_5925.JPG We could easily see our marina from the back yards at the homes but our boat was...

After we completed looking at all the displays at the museum and lab, we went across the street to the Edison and Ford Winter homes.

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

One of Edison more famous inventions was the phonograph. IMG_5918.JPG The staff even played one of them for us. Edison had a lab where he tried for several years to come up with a plant species that was available in the United Stated for rubber production. By the time he chose the goldenrod plant as...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We have been at the Edison Ford marina in Ft Myers for two weeks now. We really like this marina. When we arrived two weeks ago, the harbormaster could only guarantee us a slip for two weeks because it was all ready reserved by a party coming down the East coast to Florida for the winter. But the bo...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

We decided to have lunch at a restaurant called The Ford Garage. The food was excellent and the decor matched the name. There was an old ford car hanging from the ceiling and the bathrooms had tires for sinks with gas pump nozzles as water faucets. IMG_20191229_135717.jpg IMG_20191229_143843.jpg We ...

Near the entrance to the museum is a large banyan tree that was planted by Mr Edison in 1925.The tree is huge with the circumference of the aerial roots of 390 feet. The banyan tree is a member of the rubber family and was given to Mr Edison by Harvey Firestone. IMG_20191229_120216.jpg We will wait ...

Re: Travels and Adventures of "Curt's Dream" a True Grit design-The Great Loop

High winds on Charlotte Harbor kept us pinned down at Burnt Store marina South of Punta Gorda until the 27th of December. We had plenty of time to explore the area around the marina. I walked to a Dollar General that was 2 miles away for basic groceries and got a ride back to the marina from a local...
