Re: glassing plywood prior to hull installation

Scot2640 What boat is this? Bill 41 foot Diesel Duck. George Buehler describes this technique in his Backyard Boat Building book. Although he has never done it, I asked, this is the way he says he would do it if he had to. I've posted this question on a couple other boating forums and I've had the ...

Re: Silicon Bronze...Frearson vs. Square Drive

I've been sourcing materials for my big build and I have found Jamestown distributors to have the best price on SB screws. They carry a huge assortment with a square drive. Mcfeelys does as well but they were the most expensive that I found. I'm shopping for the big ones, 12 and 14 size so its painf...

glassing plywood prior to hull installation

As the title indicates, does anyone have any experience with glassing the individual plywood panels that have been cut to shape prior to actually installing them on the hull? Do they remain flexible enough to bend? I'll be using several layers of 3/8" ply (species TBD) and obviously only the final l...

Re: Waxing philosophical and boat building

I think it's honorable and noble to cement your legacy in something physical. Memories fade, people move on. Do you rember the sound of the voice of your grandfather? I don't, but I can hold his tools in my hand. I've been building things for a long time, I love being an amateur woodworker, but some...

interesting method for scarf joint

This guy has a lot of great videos but i thought this one was interesting. It would probably only work on larger timbers but man is it fast. You can fast forward to the 3:30 mark if you want to get right to it.

Framing and sheathing complete! She just needs her roof.

That will have to wait however, as upstate ny is expecting our first snowstorm of the year with 50mph winds.

Re: Boat building bow roof shed

I set up my iPad and used the time lapse function for my boat shed build. I thought it was neat so I'm sharing it here.

Re: Boat building bow roof shed

I looked in to the Stimson bow roof shed design but I had trouble reaching him.

UV is definitely the enemy. Some of the greenhouse visqueen has 4 year UV resistance.

Re: Boat building bow roof shed

Don't know why some pictures get spun around. Maybe something to do with shooting with the phone in landscape or portrait. Anyway, couple more shots of my build. If you click on them they appear in the proper orientation.

Boat building bow roof shed

As I plan for my big build and since I'm also in need of another storage building I began researching my options. I settled on a bow roof shed using diy custom made wooden arch trusseses. Its labor intensive but low cost for the size structure you can build (45x20 in my case). I thought this would b...

Re: Project *OverKill* Tahoe 23

Resawing lumber will require a beefy machine. When resawing anything over say 5 or 6 inches will require an excellent blade and the more HP, the better. Resawing is the most demanding task for a bandsaw. Both those machines are excellent quality but I heard Laguna customer support is terrible, howev...

Re: New guy intro from Rochester, NY

Welcome! I'm west of you in Churchville. I have about 60 hours in on my zip. I've never built a boat before either. It's great fun, very challenging, but in a good way.
