Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story

51 hours in. I've made some mistakes but I think I've recovered ok. I guess we'll see as every step builds on the last. I got to use the poxy grip a few times, great stuff, easily restores less than perfect joinery. Band saw worked great for the scarf joint on the keel. I'll do the same for the batt...

Gas engine in a displacement hull

I'm still plugging away at my zip, having a great time but I still dream of bigger things. I'm looking at some of the big crusing plans here on Glen-L and some considerably more expensive stock plans from George Buehler (diesel duck, NW cruiser, Ullin 45). I'm reading and researching about various t...

Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story

Hi john. I started with some waterproof construction epoxy I had on hand from Home Depot. It worked ok but set up way to fast. I bought some system 3 and glen l epoxy through the site here. Today was my first experience with the System 3, what a difference in quality. Good working time, easy mix and...

Welcome Jeff! Nice to see another member so close by. I may need an extra pair of hands someday! I have a full wood shop I'm willing to trade for an engine consultant!

Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story

Hi Jeff, yes I was just there Friday picking up some plywood. They are the closet retailer with marine plywood in the Rochester area.

Re: Klondike Build

Absolutely stunning. Spent the last 2 hours reading this thread having just discovered it. What an inspiration for those of us planning for bigger builds in the future....not this big, but big for mortals.

Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing her in the water.

Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story

Plugging away with 27 hours in. Building frames, cutting parts from 3/4 okoume plywood, epoxying and screwing together, flush cutting with router for alignment. All I have left is to cut the transom. I bought all the lumber for the building frame and hope to have that up tomorrow. With a little luck...

Re: New member from oregon

After watching your entire you-tube series I'm advocating for a drinking game in your honor. Every time you say, "making great progress" you take a drink.

That damn saying now rings in my head every time I'm in the shop!

Your zip is looking beautiful, keep it up.

Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story

Bill I agree with you but again I am not relying on the pocket screws for strength. The epoxy and gussets will still be installed with bronze screws/nails. The pocket screws were in my case purely for alignment purposes and to hold the joint together until the epoxy cured. I would not recommend pock...

Re: Rochester NY Zip build, a love story

I'm going slower than I thought I would but that's ok I'm having fun. At around 13 hours in and I have 2 frames built. Taking my time trying to ensure equal angles on the insides of the frames. Sometimes that's difficult with no straight lines to reference off of. When in doubt I'm going for symmetr...

Re: Options for hot water

Thanks billy, that's a good one to. It leads me to my next question further illustrating my depths of ignorance. How do you get water pressure with the smaller 6 gallon style hot water heater? I'm guessing a pump of some kind. I assume that pump would also play a roll in the cold water supply in the...

Thanks a lot ray that was very informative. I think I watched a video interview with you discussing the propane fridge. Never even heard of such a thing.

So much to learn! I appreciate the help!

Re: Options for hot water

Thanks guys, makes sense.

Understandably there are power limitations but for the occasional shower that's ok with me.

Appreciate the help.

Electrical systems on a cruiser

Going along with my previous post on hot water: my subject line is a whopper of a question, I know. For extended periods at sea how does a boat generate electricity for small appliances and other electronics? On a craft under 30' are you required to keep the engine running at all times or does some ...
