Re: Finishing Zip Hull

Misers,

It is coming on along pretty good. I have the entire hull fiberglassed. I will probably attach my skeg tonight and hopefully by next weekend I will be painting. It is hard to get a better picture because of my paint tent I am working in but below is a few pictures from last night.

Bham, AL zip progress

Hello everyone,

I haven't done a good job of updating my progress; however, I got my first two coats of Poxy Sheild on the hull and it is too pretty not to share. I love how the wood darkens and the grain pops out. Thank you all for your support thus far.

Happy boat building,
Jason

Re: Finishing Zip Hull

I think I would feel better putting an encapsulation coat on first. I did get some famowood to fill screw holes, but I was thinking about using fairing compound for everything below the water line. I figure it will provide more moisture protection for any hull penetrations and it is going to be pain...

Re: Finishing Zip Hull

Thanks Bill! Do you have any suggestions for applying epoxy and fiberglass here in the hot and humid southeast?

Re: Finishing Zip Hull

Thanks Cabron!

So the glass should be put on dry before any epoxy shield?

Finishing Zip Hull

Hello, I am getting close to finishing my planking and had a few questions moving forward. If all goes well with my last two planks I plan on having a bright side finish. The order I think things need to happen is: 1. Fill and sand all screw holes with wood filler and/or thickened epoxy. 2. Rough sa...

Re: First major problem with Zip build

Thanks Andy, that's makes me feel better that someone else had the same problem. I hope I can find a way to cover it. Otherwise I will just have to paint the hull. Peter, I am using Mertanti and it is 5 ply. I bought it from World Panel. The brand name was hydrocore, no sure if it differs from the h...

Re: First major problem with Zip build

I was hoping to only paint below the water line but I guess that depends on how the rest of the planking goes.

Re: First major problem with Zip build

I now have a more concerning problem. This afternoon when I was taking the clamps off the stbd aft side planking I realized there is a small crack about 18" from the transom in my side planking. The crack appears to just be in the top veneer. It is above the waterline. I hope I can sand it down so i...

Re: First major problem with Zip build

Andy,

They were bent one at a time. It actually broke several days after it was glued when I was laminating the opposite side.

Hey Joshua,

I watch your zip build videos every month! I would not have made it this far without your channel. Thank you!

Re: First major problem with Zip build

Thanks Bill! I will give that a try once I free up some clamps. You can never have enough clamps! Should I add material all the way from frame 5 1/2 to the stem?

Hi Bill,

I live in Trussville. I believe I met you last summer at Woodcraft in Pelham while picking up some mahogany.
