Re: Two Boat Flips in one week

Yes, I know I am very spoiled. The real truth is I could not really afford to buy my toys all at one time (the hot air balloon, kayak, airplane and soon to be Zip) so that is why I built them and paid for the materials as I could afford them. After several years of hard work I ended up with stuff I ...

Re: Up date on build

Looks Great... How did you get that paint to shine? Did you spray or roll on your paint and did you sand and buff? I used a marine paint and rolled it on my Zip. I have been struggling with issues of orange peel and bubbles that do not flow out. After it dries the tiny little bubbles look like dust ...

Re: Zip Frame Questions

Welcome Blair, I am also new at this so my advice may not be the best. There are some very experienced builders on this site. Here is what I did because I was also confused about the frame joint. I went over and looked at a Zip build about an hour from my home and saw that he had purchased a frame k...

Hot Air Balloon Basket and Bending Wood

After breaking my Chine on my "Zip" and getting several reponses to my post, "Broken Zip Chine" I began to think about the time when I built my Hot Air Balloon Basket. Sure, the basket is made of wicker but I had to bend it with some very sharp curves. What we do with the wicker to make it bend is s...

Re: Broken Chine on Zip

Bill and others, I also think that the notch in frame 5 1/2 was too tight and also contributed to the stress on the mahogany. Prior to my attempt to bend the chine I did use a scrap piece of pine and fitted it to the frame. Making the angles in the notches as accurate as I could so I would not have ...

Broken Chine on Zip

Well, I did it. I placed my 3/4" X 2" X 16' into the wood steamer for 2hrs and started to fit it on my frame. Working from the stem, the chine snapped in two within 30 sec. I was very careful to move slow and easy and with little to no force, I had two pieces. Looking at the interior grain of the wo...

Zip Transom Height

My first post, new member and building a Zip. I have acquired a 1962 40hp Johnson Long shaft and have a question about the recommended transom height. The motor came off of an old bow rider with a transom height at 19.5 inches. I measured the motor and not sure if I am measuring the correct location...
