What ratio for Velvet drive on 350 Chev in Gentry?

I am very early on in the build process, but looking around for "stuff" for my Gentry. On Ebay is a brand new Velvet drive transmission. It is 1:1 though. He has a Buy It Now price, but also Make an Offer. Question is, what reduction is appropriate for such a mating? I know "it depends", but somebod...

Re: Hello from Sunshine COast, Queensland, Australia.

Finally committed boat building! Made the stem (Gentry) successfully out of 3/4" ply. Now for real timber. After two faulty thicknesser/planers arriving :x I am in danger of getting a good one delivered tonight after work. That means no more excuses for cutting up real timber. The hard bit is decidi...

Re: Fastener Kits & Books

Are the Glen-L fastener kits the best way to buy the needed fasteners for building a boat? I am refering to the fastener kit for the monaco Item 68-716 for $491.32. Would it be more expensive to buy the required quantities of nails and screws individually and not in the kit? I guess if you know tim...

Welcome Jeremy. I am new as well, and as you say this site has already helped. All the best with your build.

Scared now... Sunshine Coast, Qld, Australia

I have a $300 set of plans (Gentry), $3500 worth of machinery and $3200 worth of Fijian Mahogany ('swietenia macrophylla') sitting at home. 8) Got me a bench saw, thicknesser/planer, bobbin sander, 12" disc sander, and dust collector. (Did well, Wife is feeling guilty because we sold our 38' Cabin C...

Re: Finally starting on the boat!

Nice looking work Over (did you cut those frames or buy the kit?). Here's to years of fun ahead. I am waiting on my tools and timebr to arrive and will hopefully follow suit shortly. I would love to have got the frame kit, but they aren't making them any more.

Re: Amoora for Gentry frames

Thanks Oyster. I am more than a little inclined to stick with what is on the plans regardless of (3 x) cost.

Amoora for Gentry frames

Amoora, also possibly called Pacific Maple has been suggested as a replacement for the very expensive Mahogany over here. Has anyody had any experience with it? If it were technically suitable, would using it have any negative affects on the desirability or saleability of a finished Gentry? Not that...

Newbie timber size confirmation for Gentry

Hi All. I am just starting out on building Gentry. Hurdle #1 is buying timber. The Bill of Materials makes a big thing of buying "lumber yard size". The BOM states for the frames for example to buy 1" (lumber yard size?), but then I expected the plan to specify a smaller size (net size?) for that pa...

Re: Hello from Sunshine COast, Queensland, Australia.

Thanks Oyster. He probably wouldn't mind, but he might not get it back. She has a somewhat lumpy cam, probably need changing for boat use. Don't know how the fuel injection would be. Need to start looking out for an engine and velvet drive. Did a little research and looks like best to go for a speci...

Hello from Sunshine COast, Queensland, Australia.

Hi All. I am new to boat building/woodwork, starting with a "Gentry". Plans arrived yesterday, very excited. Mahogany seems expensive and difficult to get here, but I want to stick with it if I can. Kind of amused at a 350 Chev in a 17 ft. boat, hope it has enough grunt ;). Actually, my little Broth...
