Re: Where to start...

Iggy: I just went back and read (most of) you entire thread. Very inspiring. I just started a barrelback, my first build, and I could really relate to your early posts. What have I got myself into? I don't have the skills, tools, _____, to do this. Frustrations and set backs and the all consuming ob...

Re: Florida Barrelback

I’m starting to think about the next step, battens. Question, in the pic below I’m considering landing the inboard batten on the keel and the outboard on the chine. That seems to be where they want to go. Does anyone have pics of those joints? I’m wondering if I need to twist the inboard batten to v...

Re: Ready to flip

Nice flip. Congrats!!! I’m jealous of how clean your garage is and how much space you have. Beautiful hull!

Re: Florida Barrelback

Hi Corey. I’m just north of Tampa. Wrestling that sheer into place was a mess. I had to recruit help and it’s still not perfect. It drifted a little vertically as I was attempting to drill glue and screw all at once... I have no idea what problems that’s going to cause me down the road but I guess I...

Re: Florida Barrelback

I think I understand this part of the plans but before I do something stupid... 38350299-758E-4654-BA63-910D26A844EA.jpeg I put the two layers of sheer in at the sheer point on each frame. Frame 6 and 7 get a third lamination between frames behind the first two layers. Frames 1,2 and the transom get...

Re: Florida Barrelback

It may be because I live in Florida where the garage is essentially a steam room but, I had no problem coaxing them into shape. Now cutting the notches was a whole different story. I’m going to need a few shims... I think I finally figured out a process: 1: Determine which side of the frame will nee...

Re: Florida Barrelback

Still building a boat. Took a little two week hiatus to get scuba certified with my son. Keel is installed and one chine is ready to go in.

Re: Virginia Barrel

I was just going to suggest that. I struggled in the same place. The lettering on the drawings is pretty awful. I went with it being 3" because every other frame was 3". Glad you figured it out!

Re: Florida Barrelback

Framing is done! I’ll be working on the keel tomorrow. It’s amazing how much progress you can make when you take a week of vacation. 7EABBF78-1D80-4D79-884C-4C2DAFDFB452.jpeg I’m curious, what are people paying for okoume plywood? The one place I’ve found it locally wants $99 a sheet. I didn’t have ...

Re: New Member from Crawfordville Florida

Welcome David. I’m building a Barrelback in Tampa. I’m not experienced enough to point out any pitfalls, just started mounting frames to stringers on my first boat this week. The one thing I have learned is to read the instructions through completely before you start and maybe a few more times as yo...
