Yes, I LOVE Dale Hollow lake. It winds around through the hills for miles and miles and it's just beautiful. But for the past several years, we've gone to Center Hill instead, simply because it's easier to get to - right off the interstate. But the last few years have seen Center Hill really getting...

I would scarf the oak into a longer piece that was half the thickness I need, then laminate them together, off setting the scarffed joints. That would be one way to do it. Here's what I was thinking. The stringers need to be quartersawn according to the plans. But quartersawn is difficult to comeby...

That means that your girls and my wife all belong to the same common sisterhood. LOL IF it was possible to carry enough toilet paper to service the girls for the weekend and you had the misfortune of having the boat sink, it might seriously impact the lake level.* I can see where your idea of ferryi...

And I would think that encapsulating pine with epoxy would be somewhat akin to encapsulating a marshmellow. Anywhere the boat took a sharp hit, the wood beneath the epoxy would dent in leaving the the epoxy standing on it's own if not cracked. The epoxy itself would also fail quickly.

Price on pine was also about 20% that of oak so take a wild guess as what I'm using on my boat. Please tell me that you're NOT building a boat using pine...... except for maybe the build form. Before I started on the Zip project, I was looking for white oak for the motor stringers for my Mist Miss....

Re: New to boat building.....need a little encouragment

.....but im not shure i can do it, since ive never built a boat before...... Well, try not to look at the entire project at once but rather try focusing on no more than one little task at a time. I've always thought that it was the most amazing paradox. Some of my carpenter/cabinet/furniture buildi...

Well, at least he had the courtesy to post it in the "miscellaneous" section. I think spam is quickly reaching new heights in insidiousness.

Re: rot

Maybe I should have made it more clear that i explicitly am refering to battens and frame. For instance: you have a cold molded wooden boat. There is a openspot in the epoxy which you haven't seen. Well, you're right in that getting ALL the openspots is the trick. Honestly, when I think of epoxy en...

You can start by completely studying Mark Bronkalla's website: www.bronkalla.com Mark has built a Glen-L Riv and has done a superb job documenting his build for others to learn. A number of years ago, I bought a copy of Reuel B Parker's book: "The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding From Lofting to Launchi...

Re: Encapsulating with Epoxy can cause rotting????

encapsulating for instance ash with epoxy can cause serious problems. By encapsulating the wood it can not breath. This is the reason that woods can deteriorate in an excelerated tempo compared to even untreated wood. I'm going to disagree with this statement, Kenneth. It's my understanding that in...

With the accent on the 2nd syllable?

As in "sa PEE lee?"

Here in the states, we've been seeing a little more and more of this wood "Ipe." Bronk used this to build the swim platform on his boat. I found that it was pronounced "EEE pay."

Ok, this is a silly question.

How do you pronounce "Sapele?"
