Re: Stuck throttle on my Zip!

Thanks for the knife plug Roberta! (I have a few available. lol) Yes Hoodman, my transom was shaped for a 20" shaft. I'm proud of exactly how perfectly aligned with the bottom my motor is too--worked hard on this area. I've spent the last few days shopping for options. I've looked at Tohatsu, Suzuki...

Re: Michael's ZIP

Things to consider: A hatch cover would likely need to be curved to match the deck contours--tricky. If you know you will be using it as a two person boat, consider driving from the back seat (like the very closely related Flying Saucer). You could still rope start, still build a hatch, cover, or ru...

Re: Michael's ZIP

Once mine is refinished, it will have no bright work, but my paint will pay homage to the classic look.

My life is waaaay too busy for annual maintenance.

Re: Stuck throttle on my Zip!

Current mill weighs 175.
It doesn't do a great job of pulling fuel from way up under the bow. I have to pump the bulb regularly.
It's also 42+ years old.
You are right though. It works. It even has a new pig tail.

Re: Stuck throttle on my Zip!

The Seastar wouldn't quite fit my boat. The Uflex vintage type dual lever was a favorite back when I was building. Can't recall why I went with the Mercontrol. It just seems like it would be simpler and thus, more reliable. It should be a direct connect if my cables are cc179s like I think they are....

Re: Stuck throttle on my Zip!

Found the problem. The shifter 'lobe/cam' was grinding in such a way that it caused a sharp angle of metal to fit and lock into a worn groove across the mating surface at the hub. Now, do I dremmel and lube for now or buy a new quadrant? Hmmm... This is already my second Mercontrol from that era. I'...

Re: Stuck throttle on my Zip!

I pulled the cowling as Roberta suggested. Nothing obvious--looked real good. Then, I unmounted the throttle quad and opened it up to see if anything obvious was wrong there. I got things moving again and lubed up the componets, but I never identified the culprit. I just blamed it on poor lubricatio...

Re: Michael's ZIP

I like accents and a painted hull.
The few areas of my clear-coat, catalyzed marine paint finish which are bright work are the only ones failing after 5 seasons. Thus, I need to refinish my deck as a result.

That photo you modified was always my favorite one in the Zip section.

Re: Zip Floor

My fuel tank is a 13 gallon Moeller up under the bow for better weight distribution.

However, the fuel line is too long for the fuel pump so I recommend putting it elsewhere. Perhaps it would have been better to place the battery up front.

Re: Zip Floor

My flooring is 3/4" marine ply custom cut for the front and rear between the members where one might stand right in front of the seats.
Like Roberta, I put no floor ahead of frame 4.
I like the feel the water slapping the hull under my feet knowing that 1/4" is all there is there.

Yes it's metal.

Thanks for the tips Roberta. Gonna dive into it in the next few days if plans stick.

Stuck throttle on my Zip!

The last time I took out the Zip, the wife and I were at full throttle on Lake Lowell here in Idaho. When I went to throttle back on my 70s vintage MerControl, it was stuck full open. I damn near ripped it from it's mounting trying to free it. Eventually, I killed the engine via key as we approached...

Throttle Problem

So, we were cruising around Lake Lowell yesterday when my 70s vintage throttle quadrant decided to get stuck at near full throttle. It gave one very small warning a few minutes earlier but then it was stuck. Had to ahut down as I approached the dock.
Anyone?
