Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Billy,,,,, There is a problem with the brad nailer as well... The problem is that it sinks the brads below the surface of the wood, leaving a decent size hole to fill. I have found the only way to use it on finished planking is to nail through scrap 1/8" strips. Then after the epoxy has set up, tap ...

Re: Florida Barrelback

Here is a picture of the rolling building form I made for my Palm Beach 22 build. I fabricated four "L" brackets which I bolted to the floor during construction of the framework and the first layer of plywood cold molded planking. Then I cut the bolts off and was able to roll it around easily in any...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Lee, There has been much discussion here on the forum about the Raptor stapler problems. I am pretty sure Raptor reads the forum and Glen-L sells their products. You would think someone would take an interest in correcting the problems, especially considering what we pay for their products !! The st...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Billy I have both the Raptor stapler and brad nailer. The staple gun constantly gives me problems, but I do use it in conjunction with 1" brads through the plywood planking and into the battens/chines, etc. I also staple through a rope to hold everything while the epoxy sets up. Then I remove the me...

Re: G-14 Dates and Location

I got a call from Hannah at Hales Bar this afternoon. She is still blocking out all of the floating cabins for our group in September but will have to open them up to other customers as of July 12th. So please make your reservation if there is a chance of you attending. They will give the entire dep...

Re: Lee's Monaco utility build

Lee, Just a suggestion to cut down on waste...... Rip the plywood in the desired width, 8' long. Then take the long piece and clamp to the hull and cut it on an angle just proud of the bottom of the hull. Then use the part you cut off, which will also have an angle, for the other side. You will end ...

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I have made progress on the bottom. I used 6mm (1/4") okoume plywood on the bottom from the transom up to about 8' from the bow. Next up will be mahogany planking (6mm). But first we are headed to Florida and returning to PA around the 15th of July. I got a quote from my mahogany supplier for 35 pie...

Re: Building The Vera Cruise

Carl.... Happy to see the vacuum pump in action. Did you have to do much to it to fix the shipment damage ? My buddy Glenn built the pump just before he got sick and passed away. He was a perfectionist, so I had a feeling it would work properly. Nice job.!! Neel

Re: 20ft Texas Barrel

Matt... You must have some mahogany planking left over. I think it would look nice if you finished the underside of the hatch to match the hull. Everything Looks great.

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

Thanks Bryan.... My son purchased many Festool items about five years ago and wasn't using them much. So he gave them to me to use. The RO sander is a Festool and you can see it on the floor of the second picture above. It does have a handle on it which makes it very easy to control. It is very powe...

Re: Building The Vera Cruise

Looking really nice Carl. For future reference, somewhere along the way I learned that plastic thru hulls should not be used below the water line on wood boats. I forget why exactly, but I think because wood moves, the fittings could crack. Not 100% sure of that.....

Re: Neel's Palm Beach 22 build

I spent the last few days behind my six inch RO sander with 40 grit paper. I have cleaned off all the excess epoxy off the entire hull and have roughly faired about half. I will be sanding again tomorrow and Tuesday if necessary to finish rough sanding. Then I will do some long boarding to get it fa...
