Biss: Do you have a plunge router and a collar to follow a pattern? IF so, I would make an mdf pattern of the hatch opening and use a router to cut out hatch.

Pretty cool you can get a kit now. Photos inverted because when you use your phone to take pictures there is a right side up. Don't ask me which is the proper way to hold the phone, because I always get it wrong.

The bottom needs to be smooth, yes, but not always flat. If I remember the plans, the malahini has a slight convexity to the bottom. It isn't flat from frame 4 to the transom. But it should be a smooth curve.

I didn't need to, but many here have used towels and hot water to help bend the plywood. I think once it is screwed down and the epoxy has cured it is not going to pull itself free. As a matter of fact, I had to remove one of my plywood pieces. It was extremely difficult.
