Re: Side planking transition from overlap to butt

I think your plan is a sound one. Looking at the monte carlo photos, you might want to do the fore section to the shear. For the aft section, plank until you feel you can no longer get a good result and finish after the flip.

Re: Roberta's Torpedo

I wasn't suggesting that your mark was wrong. I am concerned that when I paint the bottom of my boat that all of the plywood is painted and not showing in the bright work on the bow. I guess the best thing to do for me is set up a laser level to check the water line before I start attaching the plyw...

Re: Roberta's Torpedo

Roberta:

I am surprised how far back the waterline crosses the chine. Did you find the same thing with the zip? I was planning on transitioning from ply to planks somewhere between frame 3 and 4 on my malahini to have a bright finish on the sides. Maybe I need to transition that more aft.

Re: type of staples?

I will resaw sapele into 1/8th in planks, then epoxy into place with staples to hold until epoxy sets.

Re: type of staples?

I could have just used 1/4 ply, but the mahogany ply doesn't give you the look of a planked boat.

Re: type of staples?

Yes, the plans call for 1/4 ply for the sides. I am using 1/8 ply and 1/8 veneer to make the thickness.

Re: modified malahini

Had some free time at work, so I worked on my steering wheel. I don't have a button or cover for the hub so I have to make one. IMG_74651_zpsa57daa0c.JPG IMG_74661_zps8c9ef8ab.JPG I did an impression of the hub with dental material. IMG_74671_zpsc271e173.JPG I poured the impression with plaster and ...

Re: type of staples?

I am planning on putting a 1/8th veneer of mahogany on the sides and transom for a bright finish similar to Roberta's zip

Re: type of staples?

Thanks Neel. That's how I plan on doing mine. I just needed to know which type of staples so I can buy the staple gun. I have a manual gun, but I think with the number of staples involved that's a no go. I just need to decide if I want an electric or pneumatic. Other problem is I don't have a compre...

Re: modified malahini

Didn't get much done on the boat today. I had to take honey off my hive. I had to extract, strain and bottle 50lbs of honey. Didn't leave me time to work on the boat. I did get the hole drilled in the stem for my bow eye. DSCN0942.JPG I clamped a stick to the stem to guide my drill. DSCN0946.JPG It ...

Looks great and you look very happy (rightfully). Hitting a milestone like that is a big accomplishment. I can't wait to flip my girl.
