Re: Finished weight of Tahoe 23 and Belle Isle

Resurrected an old thread, however, each State has it's own limits/maximum's - a google search will bring you to your State's trailer regulations. In general I have seen two maximum width's that seem to be shared by most States - those being 8' wide or 8' 6" wide. Beyond that you would be a &qu...

Re: Sun shade on a squirt?

I think it's "doable". I made a sun top for my 14 foot aluminum. Ok, it has a 60" beam which is not as narrow as the 52" on the squirt, but not that much wider. I picked up a pattern from Sailrite (cost a couple of bucks), got a couple yards of Top Gun material (similar to Sumbre...

Wonder if you guys will feel the same way after your upcoming election - it's rather entertaining so far from my side of the line

Re: Registration process for home made boats in Canada

I'll have a look here for you - did mine a few years back. (sorry, long post here) I got the survey done "first" - that helped out with any questions getting it registered and the insurance wouldn't even talk to us without the survey as well. You could go the hull permit/business route if ...

Re: 60 hp on a bullet???

If you build the transom strong enough and balanced the hull properly you could hang a 350 horse off the back. And it's not the weight on the transom that's the problem (most incorrectly think the problem would be with the 200'ish pounds hangin' there) but it's the "thrust" the greater hor...

Re: New 4 stroke Merc

For many years I worked on smaller outboard (25 horse and under) and did some package boat rigging part time. Not so much no more, most of the new stuff needs a diagnostics computer to tell you what is wrong with it, so aside from rebuilding carbs for the local Merc dealer (the "new" techs...

Re: New 4 stroke Merc

There is currently two different 40 horse models in the Merc line-up. There is the (standard) EFI 3 cylinder model that comes in at 216 pounds (motor only with no fluids or prop installed) and the "Command Thrust" EFI 4 cylinder (formerly called BigFoot or High Output and possibly a couple...

Re: No relief from the heat!

I'm about 1400 miles "north" of the Gulf of Mexico but we are experiencing the same heat coupled with a lack of rain - essentially none since the end of May. I have seen more days with temperatures in the 90's this July then the last 10 July's put together. Fortunately, we don't get hurric...

Re: Good design book?

Design or Building book - very different things. If it's the latter one of my favourite "building" books is "The Gougeon brothers on boat construction" (whatever the current version is). These guys are "WEST System" expoxies. The book is jam packed with just about every...

Re: Zip or malahini, or ... ?

You are looking at a couple of "small boats" and relatively "big water" in some of your circumstances - in that case "bigger is always better". If you would only "occasionally" have four on board then either would do. If you plan on carrying four people "...

Colour and hood design look to be late 80's (88/89)/early 90's (90-92).

That's my guess :)

Re: Outside build

I built my (almost) 26 footer in one of those "garage in a box" things - basically the tarp tent on the metal pole frames. I used it in Eastern Ontario over a period of about 17 months (time to build). Was it "adequate"?, have to say yes because it worked. Was it ideal? No - even...

Re: Just a couple questions on yet another jet TNT build

Not being a marine engineer, I will give you my take (to some degree) on your questions. First, I built a much larger boat (Cuddy Sport stretched as allowed by the plans to almost 26 feet long). I went with bulkheads (to sole level) on a couple frames rather than a lapped frame/bolts - figured that ...

Re: Installing strakes after or before fiberglassing?

Great tip Bill on the PVC - never would have thought. Used the PVC (boards) to trim out all my house windows when I replaced them - machined great and never have to mess with it (paint etc) ever again. Peter - I installed them (epoxied to the hull which was covered in cloth/epoxy). Then I just went ...
