Unfortunately, he just told me he had to back out of the Gathering cuz his wife could not get vacation time. He is hopeful that next year in retirement he will make it.

Yes, that is more than hohum.

Oyster... i don't know what to say but thanks... i hope in return you will share with us the rest of your build! i was following and enjoying it on the "other" forum and saw lots of the interior bits in process. would love to see the rest of the story!
anyways, i did finish the kayak since posting the earlier pictures where it was being finished
my build site is here if anyone is interested in the process. no commentary but lots o pictures.
http://metrocast.net/~bcheckerberry/kayak/kayak.html
this was my winter/spring boat project.... a few WRCedar 3/16" strips each evening matching strips with rolling bevels. 4 oz glass doubled on the bottom, cockpit and high wear areas. weighs in under 40 lbs. so easy to carry in.
it has been a real joy to paddle and gets me out on the water even more often. launching takes but a minute. seeing more virgin territory with this skinny boat too :D

Beautiful yak Billy.

We are always running aground, easing up in shallows etc,I'd be afraid in a wood one to damage it.

Billy c my mess will never stand up to scrutiny besides your works of art. Thanks for asking about my work in progress. After learning that I am an

 LOL! I gave that place up. I got better things to do for sure in my sparetime. I do scan every now and then and happened to see your project that stood out amoung the hohums for sure. 8)
Without taking anything away from your beautifull 'yak, I will give you an update hopefully without consuming lots of space.

The boat has far exceeded my expectations in the area of performance and efficency. The boat finished off at 2260, fuel, hull and engine, a 40 hp four stroke suzuki. It runs on average 15 and when it gets rough I average 12 and will also easily stay on plane.

On the trailer road ready is 3,000 which also makes it easy to tow and requires no brakes to rust and lock up. Beam is 8'2" which also makes it legal across the country and down dirt roads too in our area for primitive launching.

If I was to tow highway I would probably like to upgrade but it launches and turns easily with the balance too.

I burn on average 2.5 to 3 gallons all day even though I did do a weekend on five gallons. Sure its not a race horse but its a workhorse for us, claming, fishing and dinner cruises too.

It draws six inches tops and goes anywhere I want it to go.

I pull up on the flats and hop out and dig clams of get cool in the water. I built a fold up swim platform which keeps fishing lines from hanging up too when we are trolling. I rigged a cockpit helm control which has also worked great with a fishing station outside too. I can sleep four adults and sit seven if I want to but will probably never want to do so unless its grandkids.

UNSKILLED BOATBUM
Dave,
Can I borrow your tire iron? I don't care if he does drive a Chevy. Nobody is going to call Oyster mean names and get away with it. That's our job.

Billy and Mike,
Those bums can't hold a candle next to either of you. :D

Mike,
I swear it wasn't me.

LOL! Actually in several ways I was fine with their label as I am very unskilled in many areas and glad of it. [see my tagline] I got some unused plans with fold marks in them thats attempting to flatten out. :P This is what makes these bones and mussels  8) move when I see the sun rising in the east.

Actually I have the Biscayne 22 plans that were donated by a friend but will not build it to the high standards of most folks. I want the boat to be completely open, utility style. But for now I am doing nothing except plotting materials from scraps and around the throway bins and will use a modified composite bottom too. Yes it will be part of the learning experience. When we end up knowing it all, [is that possible?] we are too old to do anything about it in most cases. I am working hard not to be in that situation too.
