Sounds like a Gathering to me! There were beautiful boats, great people, enough said! Next time, there will be more...

Hello fellow down under contingent. I finally started my Riviera last weekend after many years of planning, debating etc - but you only live once. I live in Canberra. I don't / am not allowed to set a finish date on this project (rather strange for a typical A type personality), but will enjoy doing the work. I'm sure I will have heaps of questions along the way, and it would be good to be able to reach out to those completing / completed their projects.

I asked a friend for his opinion on where we might have a Gethering. His idea is the Broadwater on the Gold Coast. We don't have any real floating accomodation on lakes here, so options limited. Anyhow he suggested we hire enough house boats to provide the accomodation (mayube 3 12 berth models) and go up the North arm (which doesn't have a speed limit) and pull into a cove. Dock the baby's all together outboard of the houseboats and we have our very own facility. Would have to investigate "hygene facilities" either on the boats or ashore where we stop and maybe also meet up with a car contingent carrying extra food, ice etc.
Food for thought???

The other place is Noosa on the river but not sure if they would have enough house boats up there. Broadwater is salt water and I think Noosa is mainly freshwater fed by upstream lakes and springs. It gets very busy in the Summer months though.

Thanks Dave. We need somebody in potential areas to start getting specific details so we can get a bit more serious about planning. Anybody got any first hand details of these areas?

I hope to retire next year. I think a down under Gathering would be a great trip to make!

I have been on house boats in Tin Can Bay area (used TCB houseboats) or you have Luxury Afloat as well) great place to putter around or go like stink if you want, but all salt water...there is some excellent anchorages ...Garrys Inlet and Pelican Bay to name 2... here is a link.. http://www.rainbowbeachhouseboats.com.a ... _type=next

Is anyone down around the Port Macquarie/Stephens area. 1Central east coast 2Heaps of accommodation 3Lots and lots of marinas to choose from. Only down: Salt to brackish water but other than the northern rivers it is going to be hard to find a freshwater venue with the facilities. Date: October 2013 1.Avoid the school holiday - too expensive 2. Not too hot or too cold 3. Haven,t hit the rainy period
Well they are my thoughts but we could do this for ever. List 3 or 4 sites and vote. Majority rules.

Hi Vettepilot
Yes I'm about 1hr south of Childers. I used hoop pine which I sources from a joinery company in Maryborough. He is a small family business and had his own stock of clear hoop and milled and dressed to the sizes I wanted. I'm about to glue in the battens, framework for false transom and a final check for fair, then I'm on to planking. Getting excited about hitting a new phase. Final layer will be mahogany with maybe silver ash infills, but I have seen a Chris Craft on the web that had a black walnut trim and mahogony infills that looked very stylish. Timbers will probably be sourced from Lazarides in Brisbane. (http://www.lazaridestimber.com.au)

Next we need someone to co-ordinate. Preferably someone in the Port MacQuarie or at least North Shore area who knows what is exactly available and local calls. Hard for someone 1000km away organising it

P.S.
If Bill can make it down next year maybe some of us could show him some Aussie hospitality by putting them up and showing them some of the sight. There are enough of us spread around this country to give him value for money.
