I have started on the guitar making along with my other duties about the ranch. I made the jumbo pattern first then cut the bracing from hondrus mahogany and got most of it shaped down but not finished sanded as of yet. I have a power 10" rotary sander belt feed that I used to sand down the top to .110 thickness. I just received my top and back woods, Zebra Wood, for the sides and backs today. My belt rotary drum sanding belt is wore out so waiting on a set of new ones so that I can finish the work on the backs and sides. In the mean time today I cut me a classic pattern and got all of the bracing attached along with the front inlay and one again I am using mahogany for the bracing. So anyway it is keeping me busy along with my log boat thinking.

Hi Jimmy.

I'll need to track with you on this build.

My daughter and I just ordered a Jumbo kit from Martin. We'll be doing it up as a 12 String. She is really looking forward to being hands-on building this with me.

I did my 'first learning' on the Dreadnaught and 000 that I built her as a surprise for her birthday over this past year.

(to tell the complete truth.. I set out to build her just the 000, but I was really not happy with the job I did on the binding, so felt compelled to make the Dreadnaught to do "a little better" on the next one.) These are no where near as pretty as the instruments you brought to the Gathering.

But they are both perfect in her eyes. They are both very playable.

I am thinking of trying some fancy inlay on the next one... (I'll finally get the binding right, and have something else to mess up)

Very nice! I too am building one of zebra...."Black Beauty" for my sister.

If you've not used zebra before, be careful, it is a toxic wood and can cause severe allergies. The place I get it from, the owner cannot be in the building for days after they cut it. Good luck, and keep us up to date!

... so where are yours? I know that you are holding out on us because you've shown me some of your work in a PM... Thanks for all of your "offline luthier coaching" over the past eight months.

Hey Bruce how come you never mentioned that you were making guitars at the meeting. The two shown look pretty sharp to me. I don't know when you inlayed the binding if you had the neck off or not but that is the best way to install binding, without the neck attached then you can use a router or a Dremel tool made for doing that work. Stewart McDonald or International Luthiers are two good sources of woods and tools.

I sure hope you keep us posted on your new build.
Khundley were are you located???

You guys got me started now. I'm going to have to build one. That will be my project once the Zip and the Super Spartan are done. My granddaughter wants a guitar. If I like the hand made one better, I'll give her my Yairi DY95.

Hmmmm, modified my profile when I first joined, never realized it didn't take!

Beautiful work, Billy! My father has been thinking about doing a mandolin...has the wood, has the desire, but can't seem to get it started. Here are a couple others I am working on:

Lots of talent going on here amongst us. I built a few mandolins myself but only have a shot of the A style I finished about a year ago. It sat around in my shop for over 10 years before I got back on it and finished it up. To busy building boats it seems. I also have a F-style but right now can't find a photo and I know I got many of them but will find one and post later. Also here is a banjo neck that I handcarved.

Ken that Paduak wood is some nasty stuff if I remember right. I built my brother a guitar out of it way back in 76 and thought it had burnt my nose to a stub and like a nut got my lungs full of the dust too. The dust showed up on a chest xray like little bright lights. I suppose it is a wonder I am still going from some of the dumb stuff I done way back then. Course when you are young you are bullet proof, right, wrong...........

Oh WOW, am I ever upset with you people! I leave the forum for just a little while and when I get back I find that all of you people have been holding out on me. We've got some SERIOUS stringed instrument luthiers here. This is some very cool stuff. I'm very impressed. :D

I have to say that I have never before had the pleasure of being associated with a more talented and artistic group of people who are so caring and willing to go the extra mile to help others along. Your aquaintance and friendship is most appreciated. I have benefited in so many ways since finding this group. May we always find sunshine, fair winds and calm waters together.

Roberta :D

Well I have a couple more shots to post and that is it for a bit. I moved the first set of photos in the begining of this session and it shows them not present. So here is my F-Style 1979 Mandolin front and back and a 1982 Eagle Guitar I made. I rebuilt this bass as every damn part on it had fallen off due to being wet and laying about in sheds. It is a 1892 German made solid spruce top and Maple sides and back. What a bear this was getting it in back to normal without a mold to hold things together while working on it.
