Hoo Boy!, what a week. Last Thursday, I finally had the Ct. DEP officer come to my house to inspect the Squirt. She circled it once, saw that the HIN, was correctly placed, said nice job, have a good day. I put in this request for this inspection in May. I had a temp Ct. registration for the boat, That said it expired 6/30/11. After her inspection I had dinner, and decided to go out with the dog. Same as usual, we have it down to a science. This is probably the 20th time out. We zip it around the lake a few times, down to the park, I always look for Dep., when we're down there, for I diddn't take the required 8 hr. state boating course, which is required obtain you're boating licence. 90 bucks for a class today for the full8 hrs, in a very uncomfortable seat, and if and when you pass the final test, after the 8hrs, you can take your diploma to your nearest dep office, 1 hr. away, and give them 50 more bucks for your licence. So we get back to the truck at the launch, and the same officer, Officer Scatera is waiting there with this other, huge, male officer. Here's how it went... first off I had my beverage in one of the cup holders. Bub's right next to me. They say get out of the boat, and trailer it. Did it. In the process I threw a towel over mfb, and hoped for the best. She was pissed!!! " If I wasn't at your house 2 hrs. ago... I probably wouldn't have noticed this boat!"... "You have no registration, or a licence!!"..."Is this trailer registered???!!", I do live in a private community. It's 100' to the H2O. "This is a big problem!!", I was very nervous about the whole scene. There were these 2 people, lovebirds, on the end of our dock, who were there when I launched, and returned. They were very nice, and felt bad about the situation. Bubba jumped out of the boat and distracted The big officer from the cover up job. The other one comes out of the cruiser, and hands me a ticket for $250. Oh Shit I thought, that's alot of dinero, right now   ....So now it's Sat., and I 'm going to do the whole thing this weekend...I found a course in Hartford, an hour away, and sign up for it. I just got home, and I'll have to say, although that was somewhat informative, for 7 hrs., you start to become stir crazy..like being on a jet, going from JFK, to Toyko, nonstop. I got my diploma!! I found out , when I went to my local DMV, that the boat WAS temp registered through Sept. 30!! They printed a statement saying that, and I'll use it to contest half of that ticket...The other half was my fault!  After this I'll have to go back to the DMV and try again to register the trailer...After buying this PWC Karavan trailer from this kid in Mass., last year, I've learned that I need the VIN from the trailer to reg. it. Guess what? no vin anywhere. Went over it with a microscope. Now I'll have to reg. it as a home built, and then go to Hartford again to the main dmv office, where there, is the only dmv in Ct. that issues new vin #'s!! Isn't all this fun!!?? They're only open from Tues-Fri 8-3 . You need an inspection too, for an additional fee. O.K that's all for now... thanks for letting me ramble for a while, I was it all to be legal, so I can tow it to G-5, but whoo boy!, what a hassle!!!

I can certainly sympathise, try and get an untitled trailer registered in NC!

Go to only DMW office with 'inspectors' on site and complete form to request inspection.

Wait three or more months, only to have inspector call while you are out of town, not to notify of inspection in a day or so, but in an hour or so.

Get Surety Bond for $100.00 from insurance company.

Drag trailer around (illegally) to get two appraisals for value trailer on official letterheaded stationary.

Once issued new 'VIN' take trailer to a shop that can 'stamp' new 'VIN' onto trailer.

Take 'stamped' trailer back to DMV to have inspector inspect that 'VIN' IS stamped on trailer, since that's what inspectors do.

Go to another DMV - god foribid one stop shopping - and do more paperwork.

Sounds like you got of cheap in the long run, and now all the paper work is done and you are legal.

Well, let's hope you can erase half of that ticket anyway, that would be good!!!!

I am going through the same thing. No HIN number for the tug. Called the police dept they send out the sheriff and he looks at the boat and says: nope, no HIN, nice job, here is your paperwork go back to Game and Fish (it is Game and fish in Wyoming...Fish and Game in New Hampshire :? ) I go to Game and fish give them my paperwork, they issue me a HIN , I go to the jewelry store have them make two engraved metal pieces that I dig one into the transom and the other under one of the seats, then I call the sheriff, have him come back..yup that's a HIN. now go to the courthouse and get a title....it was 2.50 (two dollars and fifty cents..) then I call the same sheriff cause I don't have a VIN on the trailer that I got off ebay years ago...Now i have to submit paperwork to Cheyenne with receipts (which I don't have etc) to get a VIN...oh well...also went fishing today for the first time in dozens of years (other than the private lake I lived on) and low and behold...here comes Game and Fish to check my licence..and Oh yeah..Officer Sir I have a gun on my ankle...thanks for telling me! I looked all day for sales stuff on that trailer..if I used the same loggin on EBAY I might be able to dig that stuff back up who knows...at least this has not cost me any money yet!!!

Maybe the judge will let you off on the whole thing when you show that you were half legal. There should be some leeway when it is very obvious a boat is home built. One must have the opportunity to "get the bugs worked out"

I had a very similar situation on my lake. The very same officer that inspected my boat and gave me the temps pulls me over on the lake for not having a registration number on my hull. I looked at him like he was a fool for it had only been 2 days since he gave me my temporary registration and knew very well that the state would take weeks to send me my final registration with the number. I had to remind him that I did REMEMBER him even if he somehow failed to REMEMBER my boat. What a hoot!!

But on the other side, after the last few weeks, I wish EVERYONE had to get a permit to drive a boat. I have NEVER seen so many fools in my life.

Sounds like Texas! except add, take boat off trailer, leave in water, take trailer to "certified scales" 45 minutes away, weight trailer MT, get weight ticket, then go back and get boat loaded. Add that to your above list of things. I think the security bond was 150 bucks...

Luckily I had the VIN # on the tittle...

Sheesh, Ive never been happier to live in Indiana.

What if you live in a state that doesnt require a boat operators license and you take your boat to a state that does and this happens? Although I am in favor of requiring boat operators license that class sounds worse than the motorcycle class, at least there you get to ride a motorcycle in a parking lot half the time at that one, yippity-doo-da-day.

Im suprised they felt the need to flex their muscle so much on a guy in a little 11' boat they just inspected. Reminds me of the kid in the tricycle getting pulled over. The combo of operators license and the two reg issues I guess was a little much.

When I replied on another thread about a "license" being not required for a private vessel,I forgot about some states requirement for a boating safety course.

Boating safety course can be taken online.....check for your state.

http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse/default.asp

A OUPV (six pack license) or Master is required for commercial use

I went thru training with the Corps of Engineers back in the day when I was a "ranger with the big blue bubble on top of his truck and no-sidearm  "

And it was not just in the book either. It was on the water as well. At least I know what a channel marker is and what side I should be on. AND that there ARE rules of the "water (road)". Criminy, if some of these folks acted this way while driving, I would be the first to commit serious road rage if the popo did not get them first.

I like Alabama! I was grandfathered on my license. They just added the V. Otherwise, you can take the course online.

The boat HIN, they e-mail you the form. Fill it out, send it back with $20 and a picture of the boat. The form has a place for the trailer VIN and engine serial number.

Two weeks latter Marine Policy set up a time come by and give you HIN and record where you hide the second number. Go to the license office get your numbers. Done.

Looks like Wyoming does not have a requirement. But I think I will take the course anyway, just so I will know what those things are that are bobbing up and down in the water.

Hey, I gave up. I had the trailer registered three years ago in Marietta GA. I cannot find the old registration. But I called DMV and they said send them a copy of my license and a check for $1.00 and they will send me a copy of the old registration. That should have the VIN on it...at which time I can borrow an engraving tool and put the vin on the trailer, go back to the tag office and try to get a title and tag the trailer. Wow this really is fun !! By time I get this done i will have to cut a hole in the ice to use the boat !
