Thanks for the post. Looks like the bulk heads are all Plywood? That is the way I think I will go.

I like the rudder setup and don't think it would look too bad on my crackerbox Mmmmmmm

to fergal butler,
We built a Canada One Design (COD) which is very similar to a crackerbox. We took a few liberties with the design and we also used an outboard rudder similar to the one on Aphrodite. For a series of pictures on the construction of this boat go the following link http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid= ... =1&theater
We frame all of our new boats with marine grade mahogany plywood. We apply the same principles as building an aircraft wing....only in the shape of a boat.

That "COD" is soooo sweet, :D Is the rudder off the shelf or are they custom made, also can you tell me what angle your prop shaft is and what size prop you use.
Thanks.

Gorgeous boats. I particularly like the name... Aphrodite!

Glad to see the craft is still alive and well in Canuckland!

The rudder is custom made along with the transom mounting brackets. We make our own patterns and have them cast in manganese bronze at a foundry in Toronto. I can't remember the exact size of the prop but with the 283 chev engine with a bit of a hotter cam it put out about 225 hp. So the prop would likely be 13 x 13 or 13 x 12 cupped.

Man that's a lot of drop on that prop!

Any chance you could send me the pattern for the one on the COD as I might be able to make one out of 1/2" aluminium :D or can you give me a price to have one made, chromed and shipped to Ireland if possible.
Cheers, I'm a bit cheeky I know  but you have to be in this game

I can't send out the foundry pattern as hopefully we might have to use it again. There is a lot of force on the rudder and I don't think that aluminum would be strong enough. We cast the first rudder out of silicone bronze and it started to deflect so we had to cast another one out of manganeze bronze, a much stronger alloy. Perhaps you can make your own pattern and find a foundry in Ireland that will work with "loose pattern" and casts non ferrous metals. Just look at the pictures and make the pattern out of plywood, auto body filler, chewing gum, anything that will give you the exact shape of what you want the rudder to be. Don't worry about shrinkage, it is minimal and of no consequence in this application. Remember that a high speed rudder must be "wedge shaped" in horizontal cross section. About 3 mm at the leading edge and about 12 mm at the trailing edge for a rudder of this size.
Hope this helps.........Dwight

No problem thanks for the reply, I take it the fixing points on the transom must be able to take a lot of force too. I will have a look for some stainless steel and chewing gum :D and see what I come up with, might even go back to the inboard rudder that I have.
Thanks again.
