Haven't even started my build yet, but like to get as much of my details as possible lined up before I start.

For those of you living in Georgia. Did you have any issues getting a HIN or registering your boat?
According to the DNR web site, you just contact one of the county Rangers to get your HIN. Sounds pretty simple.
But having dealt with the government a few times, I know how one wrong word can really monkey up the whole process.

So has anyone had any gotchas/pitfalls while getting a HIN and registering their home built boat in GA?

Thanks.

Price,

I worried about it for nothing. It was pretty much a non event for me. When you get about 90% complete (lacking minor things like the seats and trim work) call the DNR and they will send out an officer/ranger and he will inspect the boat. It took all of about 5 minutes for me. When he is done he will stick a decal with the HIN on the top right of your transom. He will then give you another decal to hide somewhere on the boat in the event it is ever stolen you can prove it's your boat.

After this, you can then apply for your registration which will last for 3 years. He told me I could use my boat while I waited for the registration stickers to come as long as I had his paper work and a copy of the application form. The stickers took about 2 weeks to get.

Hope this helps,

David

Gotta watch those Ga DNR guys though.
My paperwork came to me and I realized that I now have a 'Jon boat'.
Go figure.

hi jprice just had it done with no problems what so ever as far as the inspection but as to getting the reg numbers from the state well that might take some time they have just changed the way they do renewals and also new registraion so it takes a long time to get your numbers in the mail but the dnr officer warned me that it was screwed up and said that most dnr officers were told to let the registation slide for a while until the new system is running smoother

they gave me my GA registration number (the number for the front of the boat) right over the phone. THey also gave me a temporary ID number to use untill i get my registration stickers in the mail (which so far has taken about 2 months).

Then i called the wildlife officer to come out and assign and attach my Hull ID Number decals. It took her about 2 weeks from when i put in the request to when she did the inspection.

It worked really fast for me.

Move from Ga to Wyoming and the process happens in ONE day!

I was in line to get title and a tag for a truck I just purchased: the lady asked if I had insurance in place yet, I told her no...she said who is your agent...I told her...and she said: Well, just call Peggy on your cell phone, here is her number and have her add this VIN to your policy and I will get your plates!

I LOVE WYOMING !!!

(They process the title in another office next door...I went to pay for the tag while they did the title..when I returned the line was about five people deep..she saw me coming and said: Steve come to the front of the line...you are all set...thanks! )

Did I mention I LOVE WYOMING !!

(In Marietta you show up at DMV at 6am...wait in line until 4PM and then they come out and tell you that they won't be able to handle any more people after the third person in line! )

Funny you mention this, after 12 years in Wyoming I'm moving BACK to GA :D Then again I'm from and going back to the small town life of NE Goergia (Rabun & Stephens counties) which is a far cry from Marietta

Not my experience at all. Any DMV work I've had to do here is quick and painless. But maybe my view is skewed because I moved here from NJ.
