Refinishing the deck of the Zip to get rid of these blemishes. Im back to bare wood now after 7 hours of sanding, lots of RO sanding to go.

Im really interested if anyone has any ideas that might pinpoint the cause of the blemishes so i can avoid them completely this time.

My best guess is it was either epoxy blush, moisture/humidity or the store bought tach cloths' solvent? Thanks, Im really hoping to avoid these this time. Ive got one similar spot on my kayak also which is lighter color wood and doesnt show so bad. The kayak used a different brand of epoxy and varnish so maybe too much moisture during application or the tach cloths. I wonder if its also possible that I got those areas hot while RO sanding the epoxy coats before clear and the epoxy got gooey? Thats what I am thinking might have been the problem. Thanks guys and gals for your thoughts.

Chris hard to tell from the pic but it looks like what happens when you get some water in your air line when spraying it gets trapped under the finish and when the finish dries and the water finnally evaporates you get those spots but if it happened on your kyak and you didnt spray it then it could be some solvent popping in the finish this probably doesnt help much because i dont know for sure so many things can happen that make you scratch your head and say %$@#% the heck is that when you see it the day.

What kind of Clear did you use? Is it in the clear or the epoxy? I had the same problem with my single stage clear. It was 95 at the time and (after talking to the distributor) I figured out it cured too fast and trapped the gas that results from the chemical reaction under the surface. They suggested thinning when that hot and reapplying. It worked.

This was the first time I used single stage clear (polyurethane that cures with moisture) and the only time I've had this problem. I've never had the problem with two-part clears.

Hard to tell from a internet pic, but it may be only sanding thru different layers of the previous buildups. Sometimes clears can have what appears to be blemishes, but they go away with fresh topcoat on them.
Mop on a little resin and see if they disappear.

Thanks for the input guys.

Ken,
The spots appeared on the second coat, I scuff sanded and applied a 3rd coat and they were still there, maybe even worse. I was outta time and had to get done for G4 and thats how its been for 13 months, until yesterday and now its all back to bare wood.

Kevin,
That sounds very plausable, its a one part clear paint (SM1000) it was applied in late august with temps in the high 80s to low 90s it was thinned 10%. It seemed to get worse however if I sanded and recoated which I did for one more coat. I'd bet it was located on top of the epoxy or in the first coat.

Red,
That also sounds plausable, I didnt spray it but looking at my pictures I applied the epoxy coats that are under the clear on a day when my driveway was wet when I took the picture so it very well could have been a moisture issue.

The temps are 60-70F here this time of year, I'll be sure to wait for dry air, be extra careful when sanding and not use the solvent tach cloths. Hopefully that will eliminate possible issues.

looking at the sanding scratch patterns in the white areas. my vote is on your theory that you sanded and heated up the epoxy layer creating the white.

Thanks Billy, that does make sense. This SM clear does take many days to fully cure, its able to be handled in about 12 hours. I bet i only gave it a couple days before sanding so it could have been a little green to begin with and a little sanding too much in one spot between coats could have kicked off the goey-ness. I might try to limit myself to hand sanding or wetsanding between coats and give more cure days between coats as well.
