I'm keeping our boat in the garage in the off season instead of leaving it at the lake. Our garage is approx 30x21 ft, so I can turn is sideways and still get 2 cars in. I am thinking about buying one of these dollies to make moving it around easier. Harbor Freight has theirs on sale for $50 http://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty ... 37510.html However, it has a 600 lb limit. My entire rig weighs more like 1500-lbs, but I'm only lifting the tongue with this dolly. I used one just like this back in 2002 when we kept a popup camper in the garage of our previous home. I know it weighed more than 600-lbs and the dolly worked great. Does anyone see a problem with this?

BTW, Discount Ramps have this 1000-lb model for $70.

Nevermind, as I suspected, it will work fine for my boat. There are people using these to move 2500lb trailers. The sale is a 1-day deal. I'm buying one today.

weight shouldn't be an issue...you are just lifting the tongue with that rig.

Your tongue weight is normally 10% of the load. It will be fine. I have one.

So far, my wife has had to scrape her windshield twice and today, she got rained on. I had better clean out the garage and make room for her car. I would just go to Harbor Freight and buy this, but it's internet only, so I'll have to wait a few days for delivery.

I'm thinking about a set of these to help with pushing the boat all the way over in the corner to leave more room for new projects.

Whatcha think?

Jeff,my mom bought me one of those for Christmas about 20 years ago....works great!!! (she's also bought me cordless drill, ladder, etc great gifts!!!)

How about just a tongue jack? I use those more than the dolly now,I used the dolly more before I got tongue jacks on my trailers.

Yes, those do work great! I had 4 of them and I kept my Lotus racecar on them. But I have sold the Lotus and I gave the wheel dollies to one of my friends who keeps an old Morris Minor in his garage. Damn, just like everything else: I keep something for years and after I throw/give it away, I need it.

Warren, I have a tongue jack with a wheel, but the dolly just makes it so much more maneuverable. Now that Bill posted those wheel dollies, I may just buy two more of those. I can't ask my buddy to give back the ones I gave him. They take up a lot less space too. My wife was just asking me when I was going to get rid of the shop crane I bought for lifting the Evinrude. Now, I think I may need to keep it if I ever want to work on the boat or replace bolts on the motor.

I thought you should keep it when you mentioned getting rid of it before.I disassembled mine and stored it in a corner.

About 2 years ago, one of my friends needed to borrow it,and i said he could store it for me as his shop is bigger....I'll get it back when I need it!!

So, I went out today and bought another set of car dollies like the ones I gave away a few months ago. After getting home with them, I started to ponder how I was going to lift each wheel the min 5" needed to get the dolly under them. I have a floor jack, but it does not quite lift enough to reach the 5" even with a piece of lumber between it and the trailer frame.

The axle is inside a section of square metal tube. I could probably jack from there and reach the height needed. But, I don't think I should consider that. My trailer has an owner's manual and I'll have to dig it out and see if there is any recommendation for jacking. My other solution is using my shop crane to lift by the trailer frame. I'll have to pull my trailer out and back it back into the center of the garage to reach the starboard side with the crane. But that seems to be the solution to my lifting problem. I should be able to push the boat around anywhere I want once I get these in place.

Go ahead and jack from the axle...one side at a time. I do this all the time when inspecting bearings and rotating tires. Obviously on relatively flat ground to keep things from rolling to or away from you.

My dad built a trailer dolly like this back in the 60s from the front of a metal wagon. We used it for years to haul our boat to the river by hand before we were old enough to drive.

I had to get my boat under my porch roof. I jacked it up and put greased boards under the wheels and pushed it sideways. I really could use one of those dollys that could roll on the grass.

Bill,
I have a pair of them I'll give to you for the shipping cost.

PM me if you're interested.
