Over in Sailboats "Minuet - "Sweet Pea" Robert (RAZOPP) and others were complaining about time to work on their boats. Dale (Smith Brother) suggested that boat building is "7000 20 minute" task. Robert said he'd have to settle for 15 minutes at a time.

I haven't turned my hull, yet. But, I put a list together. My guess is that for every 3, 15 minute task, you save an hour on your "big" work day. Something will interupt you for the other 15 minutes.

What ever you do, Don't do "Honey Do's" with your 15 minutes. They will just come up with another. They want the time, not the activity. :P

I tried for things that aren't too dirty or messy.

I'm sure you will add to this list!

Things To-Do with 15 Minutes

1. Mark a pattern on a frame.
2. Make cardboard gusset patterns. (12 pack boxes work great)
3. Dry fit the next glue job.
4. Dry set frames on set-up/motor stringers.
5. Use molding strips to check the symmetry of curvature, frame to frame.
6. Take some pictures for John. John likes pictures!
7. Mark screw locations.
8. Drill screw pilot holes.
9. Drill screw counter-sinks.
10. Trim excess overhangs.
11. Sweep.
12. Pick up used sandpaper.
13. Cut up bulk sandpaper.
14. Plane that piece that’s been bothering you.
15. Make a list of things to pick up before the next work session, Put it in your car.
16. Make building log entries.
17. Look for and mark high and low points for fairing.
18. Get on the computer and order materials.
19. Pick up scraps in shop.
20. Pull staples.
21. Wet wood down for final sanding.
22. Do some masking for this weekend’s painting.
23. Finish that piece that you stopped on, to do a Honey Do.
24. Layout tomorrow’s work and tools.
25. Get out the C&C (Chair and Cooler), sit down, and drink a Beer. Enjoy your work and think through your next move.

Have fun, Bill

Bill,

That is a GREAT list. I completely agree with what Dale said, and things have been moving more steadily along. I think a great addition to your list would be how to actually find those 15 minutes.

My examples:

1. While wife sleeps in on the weekends
2. While Amy is taking a shower in the evening.
3. When she goes for a run (30 minutes)
4. Early mornings before work
5. During Hocky Intermissions (Dallas Star's are playing terrible right now, so I am actually missing periods too. )

Any other ideas....

Robert

Maybe you're pregnant? Naw, but you might check with your doctor to be sure.

I just may have to change my Avatar. From looking out thru that window, to one showing the back of my head. Looking at my PC with the Glen-L Forum on the screen and off to the side, saying: Pictures!......Pictures!!......Pictures!!!

(You know, like that Dog commercial: Bacon!.....Bacon!!......Bacon!!!)

(Head down, left hand in pocket, right hand holding BEER, right foot kicking dust, mumbling: Shucks! I should've at least made the Top 10  )
Oh well, give it 15 minutes..................

I always begin with Number 25 and then the rest never even come in to play. Oh well... great idea though.

Since we have some new people worried about time I thought I'd bring this back to the top.

Still good advice and the one I printed back then is now on the wall of the new shop. Thanks again, Bill.

I have to agree -- a great list, and I missed it on the first go-round.

Another related tip I'd like to throw out there has to do with keeping a workshop. If your shop is anything like mine when I'm not using it regularly (and sometimes when I am), It gets overrun with STUFF. Odds & ends that I pick up around the house and just put down there, on the tablesaw, on the workbench, anywhere... just STUFF. One of the best tips I've ever read about managing all that is:

Every time you enter your workshop, put away ten things

It could be as simple as putting those ten screws into a little bin or a baby food jar. It could be ten major things, like putting tools away. It could be ten router bits, ANYTHING. If you can't find ten things, or if you think ten will take too long, then try five. Pick your own number, but make it work. Reducing the clutter will help you work more efficiently, and that will save you more time than it costs you to straighten up a bit. Finding a big chunk of time to straighten up the entire shop is daunting, but I've tried this method, and it really helps. Like eating an elephant... one bite at a time!
