Just ran into a news report about this major crash although it happened back in late January. We pass under this bridge most every time we are on Kentucky Lake but have never seen the Delta Mariner. Owners of boat are making a case they are not at fault because the navigation lights on the bridge were not working correctly the night this happened. As a result, they passed (almost!) under a section that was not the main channel and lower than required. They hit the span and it collapsed onto the boat.

WHAT!!!!!. Does not that captain have channel charts, radar and all the fancy stuff needed to captain that type of boat where it needs to be? I cannot swallow "not my fault" - doesn't even come close to the smell test.

Yeah, I saw that story myself when it happened...I had gone under the bridge both directions on my trip after G5 and I went back and found I had taken what would now be considered a "before" picture...the one you posted being "after". :shock:

I'm with Dave, too. Ummmmm, how could they NOT know where they were, although the one article said they went through (literally) the second span, but the one on the wrong side. I have no idea the operation of something like that ship, but I DO know up here on the Mississippi, the towboats are CONSTANTLY sweeping the area ahead of them with giant searchlights for obstructions, bridges, and the shoreline. One would think that they'd be looking ahead coming to a big ol' bridge.

I get a kick out of the news station saying the bridge "collapsed". We had that happen here with 35W a few years ago and 13 people died. This case here was no "collapse";

Fortunately no one was hurt although the few that "stopped just in time" probably went home to do a little laundry afterward!! :wink:

I dont understand either, how that happened. River charts have a drawing of bridges on the back side of each page, AND that news article said there was River Captain on that RoRo.
It just doesnt make sense.

How would you like to have to explain that to the boss?

(and the boss is likely going to pay for the bridge repair also)
