What is the preferred method for mounting cutwaters and transom bands?

Are they bedded in epoxy?
How long are the screws? Are THEY bedded in epoxy?
Should the pilot hole go all the way through the ply?

I used 3/4" SS screws. I think the cutwater guy Mike recommended #6 screws if I remember correctly. The transom bands screw directly into the transom framework so no screw protrudes through the other side.

The cutwater really only touches the hull at the top and bottom the middle actually isnt made as a really tight fit but you never notice that. I used the same screws on the cutwater at the recommendation of the cutwater guy. Some of the screws do protrude through the 1/4 ply hull. I didnt like that so I back those with some left over chine material cut into smaller blocks and glued over the holes on the inside of the hull right next to the stem.
Actually when at rest none of the cutwater holes actually sit below water which is nice. I used some boatlife caulk on all the screws to further help seal them.

I used 1/2" # 6 SS oval head screws. Due to the planking increasing the thickness of the hull there was no protrusion of the screws into the hull. Screwholes sealed with epoxy and I used 3M 4200 on the screws when they were reset after sealing.

My transom bands were also made by Mike at cutwaters.com. He will pre-drill and countersink the holes and they do use #6. You can get pre-war or post war style holes. Like Chris, my transom band screws went right into the transom and the frame. I'm going to make my cutwater myself...at least cut the metal out out and polish it. I'm getting someone else to weld it. I used clear silicone caulk to seal mine. I have also used Boat Life caulk on some screws and even the 3M 5200 on the bottom of the boat, but that stuff is basically permanent.

The 4200 stays soft. I used that for the bolting on the motor as well.

Roberta, Will that 4200 work as a deck caulk between the field boards as well?

Since it stays somewhat soft I guess I would not use it that way. I used System Three Gel Magic with their white tint. I coated the deck with General Purpose to seal it, tape masked the deck boards to minimize the amount of tinted Gel Magic left on the boards, then I squeegeed the tinted Gel magic into the space between the boards. Once it began to set up (about half an hour) I pulled the tape and cleaned off the rest of the residue leaving a slightly concave look to the "caulk". I used lacquer thinner to clean up. The clear gloss WR-LPU was applied over the deck once the "caulk" had two weeks to cure and gas out. This process was similar to grouting a tile floor. I have had no shrinkage or issues so far. Time will tell.
