Ok, now I am going to PROVE to everyone just how big a rookie boater I am.

What kind of anchor should I get for holding my Malahini steady on a lake while fishing? Lakes around here are not particularly deep, usually mud bottoms with some more sandy than others.

Also, I assume I have to drop it off the bow, or are there other options. I don't like the idea of fetching an anchor by crawling over my windshield and hearing it bump against my nice clear mahogany finished sides!

Can I hang it off the side where I can lean over to pluck it up before it bounces off the side of my hull?

Now, its anchor, chain, rope right? I think those anchory thingies come with the chain most times.

See... even a non-nautical hack like me can build a boat, now lets see if I can keep it from drifting into a rock or two! ;)

Iggy,
I use a Digger Anchor. I've had mine since 2007 and have used it with boats a large as a 24ft pontoon. It is probably overkill for the Malahini, but I can absolutely say it won't break loose. It does not require an anchor chain either. As a matter of fact, they recommend that you don't use a chain at all with your anchor line. The really neat thing about the Digger is you give the rode a nice sharp jerk and it releases. As you pull it up, the diggers drop down and any mud and/or vegetation will wash away as you pull it up.

Ian, if you are anchoring in sand, mud while staying on the boat (fishing, lounging etc) you can probably get by with just line and no chain.

I would use a Danforth anchor in those situations.

If you anchor from the bow, the boat will head up into the wind and waves and ride better.

You can figure out a way to attach a line to the bow eye, with an eye about the distance from the cockpit.Tie the anchor line to this eye with the proper amount of scope for the depth of water you are anchoring in. To anchor, lower the anchor(never throw) over the side, and pay out the line, holding the extra anchor line til the short bow piece takes up the strain.

When weighing anchor, pull on the excess anchor line that is still in the cockpit till it's all in.

fasten the excess bow eye line to a deck cleat or somewhere so it doesn't go over the side when running and foul the prop.

You have just anchored and weighed anchor w/o leaving the cockpit, and the boat rides more comfortable and safer.

As far as type, check around to see what most are using for your area, but I've found a Danforth is light, stows easily, and holds in most areas(that I've boated in)

Thanks for the tips! I think I will try the bow eye leader line idea you posted Upspirate. Do did a good job verbally describing the method... you must get a lot of practice on these forums for doing just that ;)

I anchor off the transom U bolts. Im usually no wake zone and out of most of the wind so it doesnt bother me not to be into the wind/waves in such places. Its easy to attach the line and I often dont know for sure when I go out if I will even use the anchor. In the Zip I use this silly little foldable anchor designed for JetSki's. It holds fine so far and fits under the seats. Its not a serious anchor but Im not a serious boater so we work well together.

Chris, can't remember if you have a well, but I had a 13'similar plywood runabout capsize when water washed over the transom....be very careful if no well!!!
