Ring Nails

Postby Kelsey » Wed Aug 21, 2013 6:17 am

Hi Everyone, Im building the Glen 1 15 sailboat. Im having trouble finding the 1" ring nails. Im in Victoria BC. Could I use Silicone Bronze screws Instead of the nails where it calls for using nails? Any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks

I used screws instead of nails throughout my project. Screws work great.
The only advantage I can see of the nails over the screws, is that they're cheaper.

Nails are cheaper. You do need to predrill, particularly in White Oak. The good part is they really hold. The bad part is they really hold, you're going to do some damage if you have to pull them. I use them on planking. I use screws for about every 3rd fastener and use nails for the other 2. For large deck panels I screw them down then check the underside for contact I use the nails as needed to get full contact of deck to frame.
