You might try cc fasteners. I have found that they are cheaper than most.

I drove 99% of my frearson screws with a Phillips bit. Having the right sized hole is critical in hardwoods.

old thread, but since I just got quoted, let me update:

I switched to square-drive very early in the project (over a year ago), and since then the number of torn-out heads can be counted on one hand.

Square drive all the way!

(If anyone offered a sil-bronze in Torx, I'd be in heaven!)

Square Drive sounds like the way to go. It's too late for me to change now. I already have my supply of Fearson screws, so here is what I do to prevent stripped heads. I countersink and drill with one of those tapered drill bits. Next I drive a common drywall screw that positions the pieces until I am ready to glue. When I glue I remove the drywall screw and drive the bronze screw that has wax (get a toilet wax ring) on the threads slowly with the clutch on my drill set to a low number. Make sure you put a lot of pressure on the screw when driving.

I used stainless screws and small plywood squares(with a wax paper barrier) to hold the plywood down and after a couple of hours I went out and replaced all of them with silicon bronze screws. Each SB screw was given a dab of thickened epoxy.
