I bought a new wood steering wheel, but didn't like the color so i've sanded it down and plan to stain and refinish. I was thinking of varnishing it but wasn't sure how that would hold up on a steering wheel. Anyone with some experience here?

How about tung oil? Works great for gun stocks, and can be reapplied over and over with no surface prep.

I assembled a Jazz Bass (Fender licensed) solid walnut body from Warmoth and finished it with 10 coats of polymerized tung oil with a light 320g sanding betwen coats. It has a deep, lustrous hard shell finish. The even better news is that from time to time (once per year) I disassemble the thing, lightly sand it to remove any road rash and apply another coat. Viola! Good as new (after letting it cure for a week).

8) for deep repair finish on wood I used a product call watco oil finish. it has natural resins in it it comes in a variety of colors. you rub in on and let it dry it can also be used as a stain rub in on than wipe off excess but it is a oil base so if used with epoxy and such you will need to treat it like a oil base stain. I have a clock i finished with it over 35 years ago the finish still looks great just about once a year clean off the dirt and dust and put on another coat. it also takes old wood and revitalizes it. but may not be suitable to be used with a epoxy i haven't done any test yet on it I do have some but i have not tried a test piece yet. I have used ploy finishes on the product after it dies real well and had good luck with it.
