I am getting ready to put the deck planking on and I don't want to miss an opportunity to protect the inside of the hull. I was reading a book about chris craft restoration and they said that the hot summer sun on the top of the deck will create moisure in the boat hull which will rot the underside of the deck planking and the wood on the inside of the hull. Should I be painting the hull and the under side of the deck?????

If you have encapsulated with epoxy, then anything that's not getting hit with sunlight is protected - in an enclosed/hidden space the epoxy will protect the wood just about forever.

If your bilge area could become contaminated by gas/oil etc you may want to paint that with something chemical resistant.

There is a number of "bilge coat" products that would be more than adequate, but for the underside of the deck, if covered with epoxy, I would personally consider that "good enough"...

What I have is a 16' 1902 electric launch. The boat is all oak, but the previous owner glassed the hull. I am about to put a deck on and before I do I want to get it right. There is no gas or oil on board, just electric motor and three deep cycle batteries. What I am thinking of doing is putting on a laun plywood deck first. Based on your advice, I will epoxy the plywood deck. Then I will put on the white oak and mahogany planking over the plywood. Then stain and varnish. I guess I don't need to pain the interior of the hull or under the luan deck? Also can you recomment an epoxy. Thanks again.

Nice looking boat.
Glen-L Poxy Shield is sold right in this site. You can use it for encapsulating and for structural bonding. For structural bonding you will need to add silica filler to the mixture. For encapsulating no additives are needed.

Fir plywood costs a little less than any of the "mahogany" plywoods but that's about the only thing it has going for it.

It's far more "grainy" on the surface, it will check (split) unless covered with at least a 4oz layer of cloth and it weighs more than the other "marine" options.

Maybe 50 years ago when it was still made with "old growth" stock it was actually desireable, but the stuff that's getting churned out now really is poor in comparision to the marine mahoganies...

BTW and just so you'll know..... if you're looking for a very easy way to get the interior of the boat painted with the least amount of effort, just bring the boat to the Gathering, along with your paint and brushes and before you know it, the interior will be painted. It worked for me. LOL.

The only problem was that the interior paint was the wrong color and now I need to do it again.

Actually, this is just a shameless bribe in an attempt to get another boat to the Gathering. HA HA.
