I was looking for info on the internet and came across this article from West System epoxy about water based and oil based stain. After everything thing I have heard it seems some brands of oil based stains are acceptable by WEST SYSTEMS testing.

Click on the "Epoxy adhesion over stains" link on the left once you've gone to the link.

Of course, I used the Minwax oil based stain. Go figure

Not so quick. I knew that going in and did some research. I used West CPES to seal it in. I have no adhesion problems at all. Now try to put any epoxy over Minwax oil based stain without sealing it and dont' even think about having any adhesion. The epoxy won't even lay down smooth must less stick. Like water on oil. It just beads up. The point I make, is that I never seem to do things the easy way. Depend on me to find the hard stuff to work with.

Oh, and I did sand my boat down. All the way to the wood and bringing it back up right now. It was not the stain, it was not the epoxy, it was the applicator of my clear coat that made me have to do it again. I reckon I have another 100 hours in the deck alone in the last month.
