Say, how often does one need to re-finish a mahogany runabout? I just figured that after a while, it would need to be touched up. Am I wrong? Please feel free to educate me.

Thanks!

Most of our boats are coated in fiberglass so unless it's breached it should last your lifetime :D

So what you are saying is that brightwork will never need to be re-touched?

I am betting I will want to sand her down (to the epoxy) and refinish her every 5 years or so. That has more to do with keeping her looking good and protected than the substrate.

My father-in-law's 30 year old fiberglassed Canoe has never been restored, been stored both in and outdoors off and on, as is still going strong.

A non-fiberglassed wood hull would probably depend on how its stored, the quality of paint, usage, etc.

I don't think there is a stock answer.

I agree with Ian. What you coat it with, how you build it, how you store it, how much is it used, where you live, what kid of care it gets all play a part in how often it needs refinishing.

The varnish or clear may need to be touched up or even another going over with rubbing compound, depending on how many coats you put on in the first place you could even re sand with 1000 - 1500 - 2000 grit paper if it's very bad. As long as she is well looked after you should get a good long life out of her :D

It has a lot to do with how its stored. A boat stored indoors and only taken out once a month I bet may last a decade before needing the varnish refinished. Ive seen brand new sailboats stored outside in the sun all year that need the varnished wood trim scuffed and a couple fresh coats once a year to keep them looking new.

My Tahoe was finished in August '08 with 2-part polyurethane. So far still looks great. But, it is stored covered in the shade.
