I've been waiting for over six weeks to paint my hull. The temperatures simply will not relent. It was 107* Wednesday! This is Wichita, not Death Valley!

In any case, my boat needs painted. The instructions do not give a recomended temp range (strangely), but common sense tells me there must be a limit to what thinning adjustments can compensate for.

So..., I elect to paint my boat--d_mn the temperature. The humidty is low because we are in a drought right now, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I expect that the heat will shorten my pot life (two-part Supermarine Ironsides), so do I thin more to combat that, or less due to the extreme temps? The instructions say to thin to 22-25", Zahn #2. I am familiar with a Zahn cup, but is the 22-25" a time in seconds? The " means inches in these parts. I don't quite get it.

I also can't recal if i activate or thin first...

Dont know the answer to your question but I had good luck recently with varnishing in hot weather by using Penetrol to increase the working time so it doesnt "skim" over too fast in the heat. You might try it, about 5% by volume is all you need, mix it in last. Keeps the lap marks and brush marks down and makes it flow longer.

I think I would mix a very small batch and paint in the heat and see what happens on some scrap or a 1ft square section of the bottom of the boat.

Put your paint in a cool place. I do this with epoxy. It helps with the working time.

You're on the right track ... " is also the symbol for seconds. See Symbols for degrees, minutes and seconds.

Follow the product's Application Instructions. Add activator, mix and check viscosity with the Zahn cup. Add SM-605 Thinner until you get the proper viscosity. Let the freshly mixed material stand for the product's stated induction time (10 minutes) before application. You may have to add more thinner to ensure paint flow out.

Good luck with the paint job, and post some photos of the finished product !
