Ordering paint quantities

Post by Gwoloshyn » Tue Oct 16, 2012 4:55 pm

I'm going to be ordering paint for my Outrage soon and was wondering if I need to order the same quantity of primer as I do topcoat. I'll be ordering 2 gallons of topcoat, can I get away with 1.5 gallons of primer?

Also, how many coats of clear are sufficient?

Rough rule of thumb - count on 1 quart for each 75 sqft for a single coat (don't know too many people that can actually get the 90-100 sqft that the mfgs claim for coverage).

As to how many coats of clearcoat - depends on the quality of the finish you want.

A professionaly finisher will often recommend between 7 and 11 coats (right from bare) to get a "show quality" finish.

Interlux recommends 4 to 6 coats on bare (not previously finished - and epoxy doesn't count) wood.

Personally I would start with 5 coats (maybe 3 quick build coats and then two finish coats meticulously sanded between the last two) and see what it looks like from there.

Ya, lot's of work but natural finish looks "awesome" if done properly...

Yes, Plywood is "real" wood :)

A "professional" is someone who gets paid for their work - it doesn't necessarily mean they are good at it :)
