Help! Varnish has fouled my paint!

Post by Locutus » Mon Sep 07, 2015 1:43 pm

Hello.
After varnishing the deck and peeled back the masking tape and paper, only to find that some varnish had somehow gotten behind the masking and fouled my nice topsides finish. Is there any way to remove the varnish without damaging the paint finish? I used Pettit Z-Spar Captain's Varnish on the deck, and painted the topsides with Interlux Brightside paint.

I need to fix this by Thursday of this week because I'm taking the boat to the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend on Friday. Here are some photos showing the damage:

Billy,
Thanks for the response.
The Brightside paint was applied about 3 months ago. The varnish was applied about two weeks ago. Will WD-40 dissolve the varnish but not the paint?

try a small section. ...a plastic spreader like you use for epoxy work may help as the wd-40 softens the varnish

If the WD40 doesn't work out, try scraping carefully and then wet sanding and buffing. the rest of it.
