Pettit High Build Varnish 2056

Postby Ronb172 » Wed Jun 22, 2016 8:45 pm

I've had issues with Epifanes varnish over West Systems epoxy and glass. Has anyone tried the Pettit 2056 High Build varnish?

Epifanes seems to have a really strong solvent in it. I love their varnish and their two part poly U but I also had problems putting the varnish on epoxy. The Poly U worked fine over epoxy. Both would eat any roller regardless of type or material and I needed to replace the rollers often to prevent them from falling apart during product application. The company had no suggestions as to what roller to use and admitted the products were hard on the rollers.

I have no experience with Pettit varnishes, but I used their sealer over stains and under Epifanes varnish with great results.

For what it's worth I used Petit Flagship Varnish inside and out on my ZIP, over GlenL epoxy. It does need light sanding between coats but I have been very happy with the results. As I recall there are 2 variations, one that's higher build for initial coats, and one that's 'thinner' for the final top coats.

Thanks for the replies. Someone on this forum said he used Petit Captains varnish and had good luck but it didn't get good reviews on a site I looked at that sells it. The only thing I don't like about the 2 part varnish is that I hate to throw out what I don't need. I'm cheap that way.

Interesting. No problems using Epifanes over MAS or Glen L epoxy. What did it do exactly?

Not drying. I washed the surface and thinned the varnish. I think Roberta has had the same problems. I did get 2 paddle boards varnished with it, but it was work.

I used System Three General Purpose epoxy under the Epifanes. The varnish would not dry and remained soft and gummy. The epoxy was fully cured for more than a month. I washed the varnish off with mek. Then the epoxy was sanded off to bare wood and Epifanes was applied to the bare wood with success.

For sure I will not use Epifanes on epoxy again. Can't speak for the other varnishes. I do love Epifanes varnish on Pettit sealer.

Just picked up some Petit Captains today. I'll let y'all know how this works out. Should be ready to varnish the deck by this weekend, I hope.

We've made a note on our website to not use Epifanes over epoxy. I hate that you all had to learn the hard way, but hopefully this will save some aggravation for other builders... http://www.boatdesigns.com/Epifanes-Varnish/products/932/

Gayle, the hard way is the only way I learn things. I put the first coat of Petit Captain's varnish on early this morning and it's already dry. I'll post a picture later today. So far I'm impressed.

Put the first coat of Petit Captain's 1015 varnish this morning and it's dry this afternoon. So far I'm very pleased. I'll let it sit oernight and sand it with 400 wet tomorrow.

I don't know about the 2056 varnish. I've used the Easy Poxy line of paints a lot with no problems over different epoxies. I plan to try it on my railing.
