Lacquer over Epoxy?

Postby jeff k » Sun Feb 26, 2017 12:55 pm

Hi fellow boat builders. I'm getting very near painting the hull of my Squirt. The paint I want to use is an automotive lacquer. I'm going with an old school large metallic flake in the paint and a urethane clear over that. Are there any issues with spraying lacquer over epoxy? The epoxy used on the hull is MASS low tox.

I think the lacquer on epoxy will be okay, but the urethane over lacquer could be a problem. I would do a test of all three.

Thank you Roberta,
The urethane over the lacquer I have been doing for years. To get the maximum sparkle from the flake I shoot the lacquer first, then 2 reduced coats of clear with the flake mixed in, then 2 coats of normal reduction clear to bury the flake. Give that a dry sand with 1000 grit to knock down the high spots from the flake and then a final reduced clear as a flow coat. Most times no additional polishing is needed if the flow coat is reduced correctly.

I was unsure if the lacquer would soften or lift the epoxy.

My bad. I think I got that backwards. Lacquer is a good paint remover. I would test it on epoxy.

yes definitely test that as the thinners used with lacquer often will soften any coatings sprayed upon. I think you will be fine with epoxy but better safe than sorry.
