I am just about to start filling a "bunch" of little staple holes on the hull. Does anyone have any preference of wood filler. I have used just about every kind available and always found that thay tend to go darker than the stain I am using. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks Guys

Tom

I used LePage's Water Based Wood Filler. The basic filler is white but it is also abvailable in a few colors such as walnut, mahogany, oak, etc. Of course the pre-mixed colors never provide a good match.
What I did was purchase the white and a few colors and I mixed them myself until I got a good match. Remember to apply a finish coat (epoxy, varnish) over your sample so that you will see the final result to insure a good match.

Bruce.

Whatever filler I use my approach is to stain the wood before filling the holes, then mix the filler to match the stained wood. A bit of experimentation on some scrap wood may be neccessary to determine what happens when the wood/filler is varnished.
It's not perfect but it's better than filling then staining, only to find the filler soaks up too much stain and goes really dark, or soaks up too little and is too light.
