If you are helping in the clean up or just using your boat as usual you should be aware of the potential problems you may encounter. Raw crude and related materials can be very destructive to hull paint and thru hull fittings. Chemicals used to disperse the crude oil can also affect the upper deck finishes and hardware.

The greatest concern is the spill can also cause serious problems with raw water cooling systems. The crude will affect all systems that use raw water... It will coat the internal cooling fins and piping which will cause less heat to transfer and possibly overheat. It may also damage impellers.

Cleaning these systems of crude film will require disassembly of the raw water cooling system and possibly other systems. Standard gaskets and o-rings can also be eaten away by crude film.

Systems that will be affected by oil intrusion include but are not limited to:
Engines, Generators, Air Conditioning Systems, Hull Finishes and Hardware.
