I having trouble on the batten, closest to the keel: do I need to steam and twist or cut back flat, then fair. Thanks Bill

There are two ways to handle this.

1. Steam and bend
2. Slice the batten into thinner strips and laminate it in. The thinner strips will bend a lot easier for you without steaming. I did mine this way.

Bbeck the way i bent my battons chines=shears i fixed them to the bow first ,then pulled them down and around slowely, you
have got more control doing it that way ,even if it takes a couple of days you will have a nice even bend, this worked well
on the Riviera ,but the Barrelback looks to have a sharper bend, you could even wrap a wet rag around the first couple of
feet to help soften it. it is great to see another barrelback being built keep the pics comeing........

Thanks Dave and Peter For your responses. I''ll starting twisting it and soaking it for a couple of days, then steam if I can't get enough give. Thanks Bill

I did not bother with the steam and twist. On mine, I let the battens come in at the same angle as you did. What I did do is leave it high and then planed down a flat area for the planking to attach. The cross section near the bow is more triangular than square. i.e cut back flat and fair.

The 1/4 - 3/8 inch of material removed is not a big deal. The bow area is so small and closed in, there is a lot of support there.

After working on the Riviera, the Barrelback looks as big as a Pt boat......

   The PT boats were done by many of the same builders as the old runabout designers so the lines are very familiar!

I noticed it when I built the Tahoe.

Hi,
I did mine the same way as Bob did, but put an extra batten in to help support the planking to stop it coggling as much.

Regards
Martin
