Well I spent 3 hours today at CA DMV. Most of that was with a ckerk. Others have said it here but like most States, CA sure wants to make sure it collects all sales tax. It's based on what you put down as value. I guess I could have shown less than I did but you have to prove you paid tax on your materials so SAVE receipts. They want copies so bring with you to save time along with originals. I had most everything so not too bad. Supervisor was brought over several times but finally got HIN, CF # and trailer registered as well. Sure feels nice to have that part behind me!

Boat is getting upholstery done now. Should be a few more weeks. Then rest of hardware goes on and launch date still on for early June. :D

Congrats!

I did the same - I registered in Maine to get a hull#.

They just wanted to see the real big receipts (motor, hardware, etc..) Thankfully they didn't get into the weeds. But I have every single receipt.
So good advice - save all of them.

Shep,

At our DMV, there have been times when they ask for receipts and other times when they didn't. I think it depends on the clerk :)

When I registered our Zip here in southern California, the DMV photocopied my receipts, took my $19.00 and said it was a cool project, and I was out the door in 30 minutes. Same story when I registered the trailer. I even asked about paying any use taxes on materials purchased out of state, and they said that the DMV doesn't involve themselves in that. This was in 2007--08, so I suspect things have changed since this state is beyond broke.

It could be, Mark. I guess it's been a while since we've registered one too. Our state is still a lot less restrictive as there are some states that require inspections and surveys--kind of crazy!

I purchased most of the wood from Houston Texas where I started my build. Didn't say a word as she was going thru the receipts so either she didn't notice or didn't care thank goodness. :?

Picked up boat Friday. Upholstery completed and also had cutwater fabricated. Less than two weeks now until launch day. Made good progress this weekend with installing deck hardware. Lots of finishing touches to be done with less than two weeks until launch day at Lake Tahoe.

I bought my plans from Ken in Oct 1998 and started in right away on my build (14 years ago)! Many hiatuses along the way but never a doubt I would complete. Almost there.

Hey Nice John!
Getting exiting. Looks terrific.
What's your opinion of the upholstery job? Looks good from here. "Old's Cool" is going to get that done there soon too unless you advise otherwise.

Thanks guys. Pretty exciting to see it all coming together. Upholstery came out great. Exceeded the budget on it but very pleased with color combo and quality of work.

I'd LOVE to make it to the gathering this Sept. Too far for now but perhaps in the years ahead.

Will send pics of launch :D

Shep, that is just beautiful. I really like the upholstered engine compartment too.
