Having difficulty with scarf joints: Two of my first three attempts are scrap - One is worthy of use on the boat.

Any tricks, tips, or good advice out there?

PS: Also looking for pump heads that fit the Glen-L Poxy cans.

Do a Search on "Five Minute Scarf".

The secret is to put the facing surfaces side by side, and then plane them together. Then, even if your angles are slightly off, they are the same.

Good luck.

With the pieces on your workbench, fasten the far ends of each piece so clamping pressure won't make them slide against and apart from each other. If they slide, the scarf will be thinner than the rest of the plank. Also, it allows an accurate test fit so it doesn't end up thicker than the rest of the plank. I position both pieces, fasten the ends, then lift the top piece of the joint to apply the epoxy, then clamp the joint. I learned to do this by NOT doing this and getting thick and thin scarfs when the pieces shifted.

Another "trick" when you are glueing is to have a "backboard" so that the two members are in a straight line.
