After the second coat:

Next came the HUGE mistake. I had no idea about the wood out-gassing (this is my first project ever dealing with wood) and I applied the fiberglass cloth and resin in the morning when it was 65 degrees. By the time I had finished the one side, the temperature was up to 75 degrees and climbing. From a distance it looked great:

But up close, you can see the outgassing bubble:

Another round of stain applied:

You can also see in the above shot the fiberglass bottom had been started.
Just laying the cloth and will fill the weave in following coats of resin.

And now, to epoxy the sides. I used System Three Silver Tip. It’s crystal clear and works really well….once you warm it. I had stored it in the garage and early summer temps here were still cool at night. The product wasn't flowing right and was foaming as I worked it more. I called tech support and they said to take it in the house and warm it prior to application. After this it went on like water. So much easier.

Next was setting the water line: (yes, this is a straight laser line. I thought it was a good representation of all the curves happening on these hulls.)

So I taped it up: (sides have also been sanded here)

And primed (Interlux Prime-Kote)

Then I sanded the primer:

Then painted (Interlux Perfection). We decided Black. I know it’s different that what’s normally done, but we thought we would give it a try:

Next was the two-part varnish (Interlux Perfection Plus):

I thought this was good enough and I could add more coats later, but there were some runs and sags that would drive me crazy for the rest of the build, so …..guess what I did? I sanded some more:

Finally I was able to actually build something (and not sand). I built the cradle and roll-over parts:

Notice the half moon roll-over pieces are very…’round’. I got to thinking that they were so big that this 1,000 lb hull was going to be way up in the air and not stable on such a rounded apparatus. So I reshaped them. You’ll see in the flip pictures.

Speaking of flip pictures. I had several people lined up to help and we could all get together on a Saturday morning. Unfortunately, I needed another week or so to get the boat ready. After that, everyone was working, or on vacation of just not available. So…I did it myself. I was careful to have tension on the hull in each direction so it could get away from me. It was still scary seeing this gigantic project suspended in air. I would pull the strap (hooked to my cobra) until the straps hooked to the Jeep were tight. Then I would loosen the Jeep straps just a little, and pull the Cobra strap until they tighten again. I rolled it over about an inch at a time. It took several hours. Once it was over top-dead-center, I couldn't loosen the Jeep straps because it would fall. Since I didn't need to pull it from the Cobra side anymore I simply got in the jeep, foot on the brake and put it in neutral. I was able to slowly lower the boat. It worked great.
